Canon 70D

I have a friend that desires to get into the business. He is looking at the Canon 70D. I shoot the 7D, 5D MK II and III and have little in hands experience with the 70D. I can read the specs so looking for feedback from those actually owning and shooting the 70D. Give me the good and bad so I can pass it on to him. Thanks.

If I were him I would go straight for a GH4 but if he wants Canon I would definitely go the route of the 70D. The video quality isn't that different in any of the canon dslrs other than the 5d mark iii but its not that big of a step up to be worth the money. Seriously though, Canon has dropped the ball with video and I don't expect any huge revelations in the near future. Sony and the Panasonic are where I would start if I was starting today. Unfortunately I have thousands and thousands of dollars in canon glass (which I love) but now I am stuck in a system that is going nowhere. Luckily the metabones adapter works pretty well for the GH4. Thats my two cents.

I also have a ton of L glass. I really like the Sony 4K video but the photo side is crap. They are expecting to release the new Canon 1DX 4K by NAB this year at $6,000. I wish they would just upgrade the 5D first but will not so they can get a bunch of sales on the expensive one first. Indeed both Canon and Nikon have fallen asleep the last couple of years. They need to build a lot of trust back.

Again I really don't think the GH4 has a quality photo. Great 4K video. I have a friend with the GH4 and comparing the 4K with the Sony RX10-11 they are really the same. Both suck at photo quality.

He wants a good overall photo and video camera.
