Mark II - 30fps or 29.97?

I've been importing my footage into premiere and just realized that it is saying the footage is 30fps. I thought it was 29.97fps? And if it isn't, is it causing issues when I export as photo JPEG at 29.97fps? I hate this stuff ;-)
Seems like the videos are fine, but I just don't want any issues later.

Another reason to use Neo Scene. It properly interpets the 5d or 7d footage to 29.97 including audio.
I think I should get royalties from Neo Scene. I pump that product every day it seems.

Haha Jake, i've indeed seen many post where you promote them.
You could also film in 25fps scott :)

Don't think the 5D MKII does 25fps yet. Don't need 25fps anyway. A true 60fps has much more value to me.

Do you mean 59.94fps???
I guess no one is really sure :-)

It depends if you are talking progressive or interlaced. The Canon's shoot progressive - meaning a full frame equals 1 field, typical video cameras (I say typical because someone is gonna say "but my zergomblot 24RtFM does 60P!") are at 60i or 60 frames interlaced which is 2 fields that are assembled so fast your eyes can't tell. :) Ok, back to the reality of the question - 30P is 30 frames, not 29.97. 60 P is 60 frames not 59.94. You either work in progressive or interlaced. If you need to convert, then you need the tools Jake is talking about. This will allow you to make "clean" mjpegs. If you do not wish to convert, then use a progressive handler or codec such as animation or png. (These actually draw out the individual frames or 1 complete field for 1/30 of a second) - This is also how you achieve 32 bit outs for alpha channels. (Transparency). You can not get 32 bit renders using mjpeg or interlaced stuff. (Although I have fooled the software into doing it, it looks really bad. ) - So don't do it. - Most of the software does a pretty good job of taking interlaced footage and combining the fields to make a progressive clip for that purpose. But if you really want it clean - use something like After Effects and de-interlace that way. The big key is; do you need that last 8 bit for transparency? If so, you have to go progressive. Otherwise if you shoot 60i, leave it interlaced. But if you shoot 24p, 30p, 60p and now I have to go p.. oops.. I mean, leave it in progressive for the highest quality. And on a side note: the Euro version of the 5MKII does shoot 25P. I hope this helps a little bit. :) - One more thing - progressive files usually are quite a bit larger than mjpeg's.. keep that in mind.

You can also have 29.97 progressive footage... the 29.97 has to do with keeping sound synced, not with progressive or interlaced.
Seems no one can answer this question... lots of people say the 5D has file header error and tells the NLE it is 30fps, when it is really 29.97. I am just going to continue to import it and edit on 29.97 timeline and export as photojpeg. Have not seen any problems yet, and it is being accepted to all stock sites...

I manipulate video data more than anyone I know. Sometimes I do some really weird stuff.
But, according to a HEX editor, The Frame rate of the the 5d is:
xmP:fps=30.000000
Sooo, I don't know why people insist that its not 30.
its a .03 difference. and a .1% difference.
No one is going to see a car go by in a video and say "Oh no that car was going .1% slower than it should have been. That was an unrealistic shot."

The canon 5d shoots at 30fps. Just Google "MKII video frame rate" Every website talks about 30fps.
This is one reason people have problems trying to sync audio that was shot with the 5d to an external source.
Which is why Neo Scene converts the footage correctly to 29.97 including the recorded audio.
There, you made me push Neo Scene again.....happy?
Jake
