canon d500

I was thinking about investing in a Canon D500, to shoot some stock when out and about if an opportunity arises. I don't want to shell out for a D5MkII so what do you guys think a D500 ok?

There are lots f threads here about the plus and minus of the T2i vs 5D MKII vs 7D. I think you can find the answers you need by reading them. Good luck.

If anything, go with the Canon 550D, not the Canon 500D, since the 550D is capable of full 1080HD footage at 29.97fps, and the canon 500D is only capable of 20 frames per second at the same resolution. Although the 500d can shoot 720HD at 29.97fps, but you might as well spend a little extra to get full HD quality.

Of course there is always the 7D or the 5D, but I've been using the T2i/550D for 1 month now and love it immensely! A clip I shot sold within 2 weeks of it being available online! (of course this was 99% luck+good videography and probably 1% camera quality, but hey, I like to think it helped...).

Thanks Mike, I've been doing my homework a little and saw a few short films shot on both the D5 and D550 have to say it really shows that it is getting harder to justify spending cash on a RED or Panasonic Vari cam. I was completely blown away by the standard of production from cameras costing no more than €2,500.00!

Especially if you are going to only be using your new camera for stock, audio isn't a decision maker either, since most stock video does not need audio (although as a sound designer I tend to record SFX or ambience seperately and add it in post for clean audio; who knows it might actually help a clip sell better than those with no sound or poor sound).

And also remember to tally in the cost for glass.

I went with the Canon EF 17-40mm F/4L lens because I knew I would mostly shoot in this wide-mid range. I already own the 50mm 1.8 lens that most people have (although it is about 80mm on the 1.6x crop sensor of the 550D), and went with the cheaper alternative for the telephoto end with the Sigma 70-300mm lens since I don't shoot a ton of telephoto. Eventually I want to get an L-series telephoto lens though, maybe wait another year or so...

Yeah I totally agree about audio, I use a seperate audio system anyway, it records in higher quality I think than any on board camera mic system.
The way I see it a camera is for recording just the visual portion.

I think the red one was a one hit wonder, I dont think the company will be able to come out with the scarlet or whatever and compete with the Mark3 or other cameras.

The sensor size of the t2 is close to the Red one, so you will get similar natural dof and low light.

Also do you really need 4k? I guess if you want to shoot Imax movies.
Do you really need uncompressed?
I can do greenscreen with the 5d, and do all kinds of extreme color changes, I think uncompressed is over rated.
