connecting the camera

I was told you should always connect the camera to the pc (firewire) while both camera and PC are turned off.
Then turn everything on. Same with disconnecting. Shut down and then disconnect.
Otherwise you risk blowing the firewire port on the camera.

Is this true? While I don't want to damage my camera, this seems a little excessive.
I thought firewire and USB were plug and play.

Thanks,
Jake

Well I'm in trouble then. Almost everytime I plug the camera in the computer is already running. Heck if I had to turn everthing off my 24/7 ftp would get interupted. I've seen no problem. Sometimes I cycle to camera power after connecting to help kick to plu & play in if it hangs up. I don't see a problem. I never turn my computer off either unless it hangs up and needs to be rebooted. I'de say plug and play is fine.

Jake, it doesn't make any deference weather either one is on or off when you plug in the firewire to your camera no damgae will occur.

Thanks Jason
Thats what I needed to hear. I thought that was an exessive thing to do.
I read through the manual of my camera and it doesn't say that the PC has to be turned off.
Don, we're safe.

Jake, even a sick man has an answer or two.

I know that.
And from one sick individual to another, I thank you for the info.

The best thing to do, is to connect your firewire cable to you computer, and then to your cam. If you do it otherway around there might be some electrical thingies going on inside your camera...
At least, this is what my user manual states.

Jip, With over 20 years as an electronics repair technician it really makes no difference as to which way you want to hook up the firewire. The same goes with powering the units up. Both can be on when you plug in the firewire on damage is going to happen to either unit. If it were a problem all my equipment would be in a land fill by now.

I would hate to have to do that, with no camera hooked up my software defaults to the webcam. I don't like looking at myself in the mirror, leave alone when the ugly mug stares back from a computer screen. :D
