The right place at the right time...

I love my iPhone. Rather than spending $150 on a bulky portable police scanner, I was able to purchase a 99 cent police scanner app for my iPhone.

And although the iPhone comes with a somewhat decent GPS app, I bought a $2.99 GPS app that's fantastic.

Using both of those, yesterday I was able to obtain photos and footage of major "hostage situation" with 50+ police officers and then make it out to a massive train wreck. Some of my photos appeared in today's local paper and my footage was licensed by a local TV station (even though they ended up not being able to use it because they couldn't figure out how to convert from H.264 to their old Avid editing system).

I'm editing the footage today for uploading to P5.

Hmm, no support for images in the forum.

Excellent work! How did you connect up with your local paper and TV station? Do you just call them and tell them you have pics/video available? I assume you charge them to use your work?

Nice find.
In the Netherlands the police uses their own private network so we can't scan them anymore :(

The first time I got a picture in the local paper, one of their reporters showed up to an event without a camera. I was the only person there with a DSLR, so he asked for my pictures. Since then, most of the reporters know me and look for me at various events (like one today with a battalion of soldiers returning home).

The local TV stations I mostly deal with is owned by the same parent company as the radio station where my fiance works, so they know me there.
