Description:
This aluminum soft drink can was filled with 1 tablespoon of water and heated over the Bunsen burner until the water boiled. Then, as seen here, the can was grasped with tongs, turned upside down, and dipped into a bowl of cold water. The can collapsed almost instantaneously due
to the change in air pressure. Boiling the water drove the air out of the can and replaced it with water vapor. When the water vapor condensed, the pressure inside the can became much less than the air pressure outside, causing the can to collapse.
