How to make good titles?

TMB 28 Apr 2015 13:32
Hi everyone,

I'm just wondering if anyone has advice on how to make a good title?

Should they be long or is it better to keep them short?

Thank you all!

Dear TMB

Titles are important for your items to be searchable and visible at Pond5 and on the web. Best practice is to make your titles not too short, meaningful and use normal English phrases (as opposed to a bunch of unconnected keywords).

Hope this helps.
Good luck with your sales.

Hi Sasha, thank you for your reply. So then not keywords? Some people have recommended me to use keyword on the tittle even if they don't make sense as a sentence...

Hi TMB

I have a number of reasons to believe that well formed English phrases would work better than a bunch of keywords. First, search engines are likely give more weight to pages with good English titles. Also informative titles are easier for buyers to read. Finally if a keyword in your title is not too relevant for your item content it might get a lower ranking on Pond5 site.

To be true, now since around a year i focus very intensive in titles and description etc., but to be true i see absolutely no relation to any better or more sales, .... although my portfolio has become double in between!

Well, this is good information and thanks for posting that, I've been guilty of of just slamming in as many keywords in to a title as possible thinking it will have a better chance of getting picked up, Now to batch correct 23,000 titles :)

Could be worse.....could have been math involved.

I have a question on titles now that I think about it, is it good/bad/neutral to put the location/city/province/country name in a title?

Ontario spring flooding or Major spring flooding in rural area?

Snowstorm and blizzard conditions in southern Ontario vs Cars driving in blizzard conditions during winter storm?

College and university students on campus in fine fall day vs, mentioning the city/location?

Honestly this titles/keywords ordeal has bugged me a bit since i started.
I think that it isn't as important as we believe.
Most of the best sellers i see are very simple/basic in their keywording and a lot of them dont even have a description,
so we dont have to be all anal-retentive when it comes to keywords and descriptions.

It's just plain professionalism to provide basic information about what we see here in this clip, especially if it's hard to undestand where this was shot or what this portrays*.

*Ultimately this means that the clips that sell the most are those who say everything about themselves from a simple glance at the thumbnail without having to read text,at least thats what i believe.

It's the image that counts (and subsequently the thumbnail) and sadly- and i've said it and i'll say it again- if you are one of those people that jumped early in the stock wagon your chances of selling more are better that those who came in late in the game.

I have noticed that, I've looked at clips similar to mine that have massive clip views and good sales and I have almost the same scene with low views, the other clip has way less keywords.

I think location in title will help when you post the P5 preview clip in an own website portfolio, or maybe also at P5 if buyers look for scenes of a special location. So i decide clip for clip if it may help or not instead of following any standart guidline.
