Curiosity about download averages?

Just getting started here, and really wondering. For the users willing to share numbers ....
1. how many clips / photo's do you have in your portfolio.....and....
2. Approximately how many downloads are you guys getting a month?
I'm just sort of trying to figure out a general average download number that I can aim for when I finally start selling.

You can look at anyone's portfolio and see how many they have.
What you need to aim for is how much it takes to pay for time, equipment, camera, computer, internet, travel, etc etc etc. Then plan on many clips never selling or even the good ones a few times. If you are lucky to have some clips that are very popular that helps but don't expect many of them.
Don't be tempted to sell to sell cheap. The number of sales is worthless information. The only thing that matters is paycheck and bottomline profit. So decide what net profit you need and set that as your goal.

Go look at Artist resources and look at best sold for the week and month to give you an idea of pricing.
Good luck.

The answer to your first question is what Don mentioned.

There really isn't an answer to your second question as the amount of downloads is totally dependant on what you have to offer, and that would be different for anyone of us even if we all had the same amount of clips in our portfolios.

"number that I can aim for when I finally start selling" = infinity ==>because each day is harder to make a sale due to rising competition. As you upload one clip hundreds are uploaded by your competition. The return on investment of camera and equipment is very far away.

He has no picture and video in his portfolio yet. Wonder why he ask ?

Well I'm a she but I asked for exactly the reason I said... I'm curious. Photography and taking footage has always been fun. I've never really even done edits on my video's but a friend suggest I try this since I constantly shoot everything anyway. I was shocked I got my samples approved. Now I have my first submission in waiting for review. I don't plan on doing this full time but shooting the video's that I did was really fun and I would like to continue. Figuring out which lighting I could put together and what resources I had around me was great. So, even though this will be more of a hobby for me I'm slightly competitive with myself and numbers of downloads on average is a number I can aim for. That's about it really. I like to do well and learn as much as I can about what I'm doing even if its only in my free time.

And for those that offered up the info thank you so much. I really appreciate it.

"though this will be more of a hobby" - Take the word hobby out of your mind. Think professional. Shoot professional. Price professionally. Youtube has a lot of helpful videos.

Sorry for "He" or "She" problem. It is not clear who you are in the name you've chosen.
Yes, treat it as a hobby, don't quit your day time job that is what I advice you. You should read the comment in this forum and will find out this is not a money-making business if you are not shooting/editing full-time (8-14 hours daily). Do it professionally you need more than just a tripod. A dolly, crane, steadyCam etc will be needed depends on what you shoot, and it add more value on your video. If you can handle heavy gear, then go for it.
Don't undercut other artists and price over your fear-limit. Low price only destroy the industry. Passion, enjoy your photography and video shooting is the way to go. And don't complain when no sale, but learn what you can improve, what subject you can shoot in your environment which cost you nothing.

I really do love that attitude. It may take me a little while since my first submission took me 3 whole days to figure out how to do the compression to the right settings but like I said I'm having a blast learning.
