Rumours say the hack was 'helped' by Canon as a response to BM new offer.

Is 4k really that important right now? The article talks about feeling the camera actually overheating. Heat is the worst enemy of electronic components. I would worry if my camera starts heating up.

I am going down the 4K route to "future proof" my work as much as it is possible to in the current fast changing World of video. Given that many countries have not even gone HD yet (I still sell SD 4:3 clips regularly when a lot of PAL countries went 16:9 before HD) I hope that any 4K material will sell after I am not around to collect the payouts!
Of course we don't know when BM will ship the 4K camera so it could all change in the next few months!

"I feel so sorry for those that spent 16K on Canon EOS C300."
I guess you mean me since I believe I'm the only one with a C300 here.
That is a short sighted response with only looking at shooting RAW in the big picture of getting great quality video.
Shooting RAW doesn't get me as excited as it once did. Of course its better than the squashed bit rate of the DSLR but that is only one thing in the equation.
The DSLR is still shooting 4.2.0 color space. C300 is 4.2.2 that may not mean anything to you but it means a lot when you are color grading or shooting green screen.
The DSLR still has the moire and jello problems that is always does. C300 doesn't have any of that. I have been using my camera hand held more and more without those issues that I used to stay away from.
The DSLR has somewhere between 8-10 stops of dynamic range, the C300 has about 12.5 stops. That extra stops of range doesn't sound like much but again, its pretty big when you are seeing detail in the highlights and shadows.
I am more and more actually hating to shoot with my 5D just because of the detail loss. If nothing else to me dynamic range is the biggest thing. If that hack would give DR to the sensor that would be very exciting.
Also, being able to shoot documentary or run and gun videos and recording pro quality audio in camera is more than I can hope for.
So to sum it up. If you want to feel sorry for C300 owners, and all you are looking at is the video quality then you can certainly do so with the Black magic camera.
12bit color space, RAW and 13 stops of dynamic range? Man, that gives me a woody.
And to think I'll get that with that little BMC pocket camera for $1K....... that makes me very sad I spent $16K for the C300
But when you look at the other features of the C300, that will still be my go to camera for most shoots. The BMC will be the backup camera and second camera since it will color grade very nicely with the C300
So even though the BMC has RAW, I doubt I will shoot with it as the Prores and the high bit rate of the camera is enough to not see much artifacts.

I do not expect to see any Blackmagic cameras in the ENG, WEDDING, and INTERVIEW business. C300, small and versatile.

Any hack is a hack. With the full size sensor of the MK III I would bet that is very much so capable to do 4K, maybe a processor issue. The Canon hackers have been very careful not releasing changes that are unstable or heats the camera to anywhere near a dangerous level. I would not doubt Canon assisted. The rapidly changing camera technology requires an up-to date system and capability. BM has so far been a failure at promises. They know what they want to do and then blame their suppliers. It takes a whole technology team to make a paperwork dream work. They are now shipping last years model and getting a lot of cash from pre-orders for the pocket and 4K. They will succeeded but other companies are working hard without years of promises and no products. At least the Canon C300 looks like a camera and not a tin box.

Hi Don
Couldn't agree more - as a company new to cameras I think people have cut them a lot of slack over the first camera. If the second / third ones doesn't start shipping on time (or very close to it) or are full of bugs / problems then I don't think they will get many more chances from buyers.

The original BMC is now in stock at B&H and some other dealers.
I'm sure they will hold this 4K and the pocket camera to the promise ship date. They kind of have to because of the fiasco with the first camera.

Hi, Jake! I did not mean you at all. I would not do that to my friends. Where do you know from that RAW from ML is 4:2:0 ???
"The DSLR still has the moire and jello problems that is always does. C300 doesn't have any of that". While I know the difference between 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 it looks like you do not know what you paid 16k for and are unaware of the fact that moire, wobble, skew, smear and jello are caused mainly by the shutter type and are worsened/attenuated by the codec. As C300 has no global shutter it still faces the same problems as any DSLR. Of course, all these problems are less visible when you shoot only static shots with minimal movement. Perhaps sensor size is meaningless to you but dynamic rarnge is heavily influenced by the sensor size. I wonder where from has C300 that extra dynamic range? Is it real? Couldn't be a software mod only? C300 is just an 8 bit, noisy, 50 mbit only overpriced DSLR with a sensor three times smaller than EOS 5D. Minimal light setup could totally eliminate that small dynamic range difference. As a pro shooter I do light setup. It is a bit early to say that raw from EOS DSLR is worse than let's say Canon EOS C300. To summarize: C300 has no real advantages to justify the about 13K price difference for HD only cinema.
God bless you !

Ok
LOL yes the dynamic range is real.
All I can say is, I don't have jello or moire.
The sensor is a 4K sensor that outputs 1080 which is why it's so sharp.
I regularly hand hold this camera and get no jello, Try that with the 5D. yes, I also have movement.
8bit, yes that is a downer. But where do you get noisy?
I have shot at 12,500 ISO and get great footage. In contrast I've shot at 3200 ISO with my 5D and had to use so much noise reduction in post that the footage was too soft to use.
This is a test video at 12,500 ISO by the way, all hand held with movement :)
C300 12500ISO test
This is a test of the C300 and my 5DMKII for Moire
Moire test
Over priced, maybe but it does the job that I need.
