DJI Mavic Discussion

Entirely possible with a larger camera like the P4P to have internal selectable ND filters.

Yesterday i first time used the Polar Pro N8. Hmm, don't know what i shall think about it. For real compare i should have done the same shots with and without the filter. All together it seems that image quality is more smooth. White areas in the sky are not too strong and cloud structures can be better highlighted with some postwork. So long so good, but ground structures of woodlands or else seem milky and i miss clear contrast.
Shots done in auto-exposure. I know, most of you prfer manual, but tilt shots from ground to sky work better in AE (with ND8).

Depending, what kind of Auto ... might have raised ISO, which in these cameras is very bad. That could be something of the "milky" you see. ND8 is pretty mild. I look at the ground, then up at the sky .. if my eyes hurt, use at least ND16. 32 in bright sun/shiny water/snow.

Tilts are a special problem. Can't remember if you have a proper shutter priority on Mavic (too lazy right now to fire mine up to check) If in that case i find to bring up the exposure later in post is better, but of course not always. Very little latitude for good exposure, and I find that the DJI compression is not forgiving either - nasty things live in the shadows. But worse is overexposed skies, etc, so ...

I went to go to your port and see your latest, maybe some aerials ... but no, Pond5 does not let us sort Artist Page by date?

I have two new Mavic shots up ... more coming, but too busy with other projects. Had one more almost done, but sadly I ruined it by tilting up .. so far attempts to make it not tilt up so abrupt have failed.

Now I can re-sort clips .. I see flicker! In areas with much detail, the ND is the only hope. Then resort to "FlickerFree" which sadly makes more render time. And does not always work so well (it helps) (works great for timelapses though!)

ISO was always 100, that's what i really take care off!
My first aerials are now online:

All without ND. As i wrote (?) it seems as if tilts are better working with ND. You can set the tilt speed in the settings so that it works slowly.
The new shots with ND i cannot prepare and upload now. The next 2 weeks i'm at La Palma (La isla bonita), Spain, and hope for some good shots. Unfortunately the regulations where and how it's allowed to fly copters are more and more regulated. I use Airmap app to check the locations.
Btw., i personally noted and also read sometimes in between that the (S7) smartphone is sometimes totally freezing after shut down the controller. A solution for this seems to be to close first the smartphone and then the controller.
Setting the smartphone into "flight-mode" is in between definitiv the solution against interferences and crashes by those.

Getting my Mavic today! I decided to go with the Polar Pro shutter filters without CPL, like Rekindle i'm unsure how well a polarizer would work when flying about at different angles to the sun.

Ok so put in a few hours flight time in with the Mavic I found the best settings for me so far to be:
D-Cinelike
-1 -1 -1
2.7k 30fps

I did try D-Log, people were saying it had been improved after the latest firmware update. Spent a entire battery shooting wind turbines in D log -1 -3 -3 4K UHD 30fps only to get home and see that all the footage looked like garbage, nothing useable! Though it gave me an excuse to go back out and get more shots using the aforementioned "best" settings. The footage looked pretty decent.

This thing is so much fun to fly, just need more batteries!!

Regarding sharpening .. I just found and watched this .. haven't checked it out, but it makes sense.

Great work Beckhusen congrats on the sale. My first Mavic clips are now live, the curators must have woken up!!

Here are a couple examples, still got a way to go to achieve those silky looking shots... need more practice ;)
