Nikon D800 Announced!

The mosts outstanding feature in this camera according to BHPHOTO is: "Live View output using external monitors while recording uncompressed video via HDMI terminal. You can also bypass the camera’s dual memory card slots (CF and SD) and record your video directly onto your computer or an external drive."

This may force Canon to upgrade the firmware of the 7D and 5D to offer the same thing!

The difficulty with increasing pixels on a sensor, the individual pixels become smaller and closely packed generating more heat which leads to increase in digital noise. I was disappointed by the Canon 7D which has 18 megapixels in a cropped sensor, the camera suffers from digital noise at lower iso than it should, making stock photographs more difficult to get accepted.

I would love the D800 to be clean, but do we need these many pixels for stock video / photography?

I agree, the 7D is great for video but photo has too much noise. I've sent it to Canon twice for calibration and adjustment. 5D is my photo camera and both 7D and 5D are my video. Rumors of new Canon don't look too promising. Nikon took their time and moved the right direction.

I agree I just added a 5D to my gear and yes I use 7D for video only, the 5D for stills is awesome, I just got some still images accepted at one of the big 4 agencies from the 5D at ISO 640. I like the idea of the D800 but surprised they don't have 60fps at 720 or 1080.

I think it does have 720-60p. Look at 1:27 Nikon D800 Product Tour video. Preliminary reviews indicate that 5D camera video is better but that the 4:2:2 uncompressed HDMI video output makes this camera superior over the 5D.

Yes clean video out is huge, I'm sure Canon will have to offer that in the next 5D? The D800 at $3k is a game changer in DSLR camera development.

I don't see anything in the D800 what would make a 5D owner want to switch. However, if I was a Nikon owner that was *thinking* about a Canon, I would get the D800 and stay with Nikon.

The Hollywood schmucks with money are all switching to the C800 (the House producer reportedly bought 5 and is expected to shoot the entire next season with just the C800's).

I waiting to see what gets announced for the T4i and 70D tomorrow. I think that will give us a major clue at what to expect with the 5DM3 announcement in April.
