How many frames for each word

Hi, I am trying to add some text into my video. How many frames should each word have?

I don't know what is the technical term for that, if you could tell me, that's great, too!

Like that:

Please (24 frames?)
Tell (another 24 frames?)
Me (another 24 frames?)

I call it title pacing, and it changes depending on the amount of time in your edit or clip, the pace/feel of the video, and legibility. It's very subjective, and based on your sense of style and "feel". Too fast can be hard to read and frenetic/distracting, too slow is boring, and the viewer's mind wanders. (away)

I'm assuming this is for an edit/reel you are producing, rather than say, a template for stock?

Hi Gene, thanks for the response. I am totally ignorant on this subject.

What is the minimum frames do you think it should be in order for people to be able to read comfortably?

No problem .. I am no "pro" at it, but I have spent enough time learning that it's not easy, and it's definitely an art. I've botched plenty, and also am very insecure when it comes to working with titles/text. In fact, you are finding that .. as you realize it can either enhance or ruin your production. Worth taking the time to try different things and see how they work. Often it is overlooked until the end, rather, it should be integrated into the artistic concept from the get go.

It would help if you describe the project you are doing.

I don't go by frames so much (especially since we don't know what frame rate you are using... "frames" could be 24 to one second ? Or is 24 frames less than a second for 29.97? Smaller words, for instance, use less time, and are easily understood, so need less time. Larger words, complicated names, or phrases .. those need more time. If you are doing a techno psychotic thing you could do one word per frame ... but if you are doing a slow melancholy you definitely want a more gentle, smooth approach, like one word fading in/out per second or so, with overlaps, placed artistically so they do not interfere with the video.

Best I can say is put something up and ask opinions. Also watch similar footage/clips/reels, and specifically note what they use as timing for text. How does it make you feel? Are you distracted by it? Annoyed? Does it seem cheesy? Or does it allow the video and intent of the text to work together and flow? If it's subtitles, then you want to be able to look at your characters' faces and still be able to read the subtitles.

It helps to bounce it off of other people, since you already know what you are saying .. you need to find out if it works for the new viewer. That's what friends are for. Post something unlisted on Youtube and ask a few friends to view and give you feedback. DO NOT specify what you want them to see/hear/feel.

Again, thank you so much for sharing your experience. Yes, I will work on it and show you later. I think I am going to go with one word per second (30 frames).
