Well if the 5d2 was a video camera and you had to pay extra to get it to look like a still camera, I would probably be one of the few to pay extra for that feature ;)

When the model t ford came out it still kinda looked like a carriage in some ways, some parts were like carriage parts.. Eventually cars were optimized, so yes cameras will be optimized in the future and they will take on different forms.

Im going to use my camera for a long time though, no point in getting another one just because someone else thinks I should "upgrade." So Ill continue using my DSLR.

I am getting tired of the 2-pop news flash crap.. their article titles for one are very misleading - they love dramatic titles for topics to link to and hence are nothing more than a cheap referrer list. I regret having signed up with these bozos. When you dig deeper on some of these articles, total idiots are writing them and are purely doing it for their 15 seconds in the spotlight. Most of it is useless or redundant BS. They regurgitate the same crap over and over again as if it was new news. - Sensationalism at it's worst. - That article by the way - follows the typical MO.. let's come up with a snazzy title- then we will contradict the title in the last sentence because we just know how to write BS without much fact behind it. Oh, and we'll put some cool pictures in the article to make it look valid. Crap I tell ya! :)

I agree with the original article vDSLR will soon be dead. It was a phase. I'm sitting on my cash right now waiting for the next breakthrough camcorder. Maybe the scarlet.... maybe not. I give Nikon some credit for not jumping on the vDSLR bandwagon. I think they had the foresight to know vDSLR was a stop gap measure and soon to phase out. Canon and Panasonic were big video-cam makers already and it was much easier for them to do the vDSLR thing but I think Nikon knew it was a short lived product line and not worth compromising their Camera line for a small market. Yup vDSLR is soon to be dead.

Look on the upside... Bloom and the rest of the vDSLR Charlatans will have to find new wares to peddle to the naive suckers out there.

So if Canon would have put their dslr sensor into a video camera body would it then have been a better product? Like Andy said a model t or carriage body ....

Well I think that vDSLR still have a long life. Maybe you will see them less in TV studios, Indie movies and maybe companies like RedRock will see their business grow smaller but there are hundreds of jobs where their size, ergonomics, portability and capabilities make them more practical than any camcorder. If they can offer a AF105 for less than 2k, take pictures as a 5D and reduce it's size to 1/2 maybe I will change my mind.

Didn't they say the same thing about SD several years ago as well? I am sure there will be cameras of all shapes and sizes coming as the next generation. Larger sensors, video facilities (zoom, AF, etc...) - But in the end - the viewer doesn't really care how or with what it was shot - the viewer only cares about one thing - does it look good for their purpose, is it usable for their purpose, and will it fill the need. As I tell people all the time... "Just shut up and shoot!" and also more applicable here; " It's not the camera my friend... it's the person behind it." - Heck, when Titanic was shot, DP Russel Carpenter used a frickin' Polaroid Instamatic to figure out how he was going to set up shots. I heard that from him personally. Now there's a guy that has access to just about anything.. and he admitted, he doesn't even know how to use a light meter. - So all the fancy schmancy stuff in the world won't make a person a better shooter.

I propose a challenge... take the oldest piece of equipment you have, shoot something and upload it. I guarantee, if the shot is good, framed well, and serves a purpose - it will sell as well as anything shot on a red. Oh and one more thing on this challenge - you can't use any supplemental lighting.

Fresh off the press today http://www.dv.com/article/99032 - at least this makes some sense and isn't along the lines of "DSLR's or vDSLR's are dead".

Well its not like DSLRs are going to stop having video functions. To misquote keanu reeves "Nothing in the universe dies, it is simply transformed"... or maybe optimus prime said that.

I think cameras in the future will be more modular, people may even build them the same way PCs can be built now. Custom cameras, with custom rigs. I think people like configuring their own camera.

Personally I feel like the camera is less and less important the more I advance... I just did some commercial concepts that may pay a lot of money, I love my 5d but I was thinking about how I probably could have used my 1980s VHS camera (from when I was a kid.) Would I recommend the VHS? No, but I think if I had to I could find a way to make money with it.

Its Ironic, when I was new, I thought having a really awesome HDV camera (hey it was awesome at the time) was a requirement for success, Im not 100% sure of that now.
