MOV size

Hi All,

I got MOV video files from my pentax k-30.

I used quicktime or mpegclip to convert it such as remove audio, or resave the file in some case. I notice the extension change to small letter (mov instead of MOV), I use the codecs apple photo and usually save as 'best' (maximum).

But the file size is becoming like 90% more. So the codecs from camera will compress the file small? what you guys do? why the camera files can be this small but I can't save it the similar size?

thanks.

I take my mp4 file (around 25mb) that I get as my finished Sony Vegas editing file, and run it through MPEG Streamclip as Apple Photo JPEG..The file size should be about 300-800mb, around that range when the (MOV) .mov is done. I think you're doing it correctly.

Michael why don't you render directly out of Vegas a photo jpeg?

For some reason, the version of Vegas I'm using (Vegas Movie Studio HD11.0) only has one .mov option and it renders it horribly. Since this version is inexpensive and has all of the other options I need, I've been just doing the Vegas to Streamclip thing. I also like how Streamclip plays the video really smooth which allows me to do some final trimmings, whereas my computer plays the original file a little choppy, even at reduced quality settings. Do you use Vegas Normstock? Is there a better setting that I could use? Thanks!

I use the Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 which plays Canon 5D and Panasonic 60p clips smoothly, I do have 8GB of RAM. When I first started doing video I didn't have the motion and JPEG codecs, I was told that you need QuickTime Pro for $30 and then I think it's in the preferences you active "Legacy Codecs", and that puts them in the drop down inside your editing software. I only asked you because I thought you might be adding work for yourself.

I used Vegas 12 and have no problem. I only needed to "render as" --> Quicktime 7 --> 3mps ---> "customize template" ---> modified the settings to 88% quality, Pjpeg, ==> save settings. Kept my clips to 12-15 seconds to save space.

Anything over 21 seconds, I upload in Mov/h.264 - 100% quality. (just to save HD space).

Yep same settings for me 90%. I have a template too so it's quick.

This is interesting. I'm looking at my options on Vegas and the Quicktime 7 (.mov) option at 3Mbps Video only puts out the video as a 640x480 frame size. I'm guessing its the cheapo version that I have that is limited. Okay as I'm reading this Vegas screen I think I found out the issue. My version does not give me the option to "customize template", so I think it just has a lousy default setting of 640x480. Hmmm I might have to look into upgrading my Vegas, after all, time is money and I spend a lot of time going from Vegas to Streamclip. I wonder if it is hurting my video quality at all where I'm processing it a second time?

@Normstock - I see that the latest bultd is 1184. Does Vegas Platinum upgrades automatically or do you have to manully download and install the new version?
