Six Minutes of Delightful Footage and Music - For Your Enjoyment

Mizamook 2 Jan 2014 01:33
Hi - it's not quite a "reel", as it was created for the enjoyment of family and friends this season to show what I've been up to (music and video), but it has the general effect.

So, friends, I hope you enjoy it. About half the clips are online here, and the rest are awaiting upload. This is a smattering of the many many hours of footage I shot this summer - still trying to get caught up! Maybe a bit lax on the editing - not quite as tightly cut as a professional reel might be, I had a lot of fun making this, and Hey! If you like it, there's another in the works..

Happy New Year,

Gene

Enchanting Gene, lovely edit with great pace mood and timing like a mini Ron Fricke production, I hope the goat was okay!!!
Thank you for sharing,
Bill

Lovely comments, Bill, thanks! Yes - the goat is just fine. I think they hang out on sheer cliffs for the basic reason that the bears don't!

Glad to hear it Gene, I trust your familiar with Ron Fricke, his work on Samsara is simply amazing in terms of filming and the tension dveloped through the edit

I was aware of the name - and seen Koyaanisquatsi and others, but not newer stuff. Unbelievable work - just viewed the Samsara trailer - kind of flabbergasted and truly honored you'd mention his work in the same breath as commenting on mine. Quite inspiring, actually! Thanks again!

It was the nearest reference I could think of, I recommend everyone watch's it Gene, he is such an inspiration and hope he's currently making a 4k something for the future.

Well we'll be viewing it soon Bill.....sadly it will be on a 24" display! Oh well. Still....at least the sound system is worthy! Baraka was quite enjoyable (we watched it twice in a row!)

24" or on you hand phone Gene you are already in the zone. have to say the music was to dramatic for my taste, and would liked to have seen something more understated and allow the picture to do the talking. However, I've watched Samsara to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here which I'm sure you'll agree are far from understated and they work really well.

To be clear - are you saying the music on Samsara is over the top or on my video? If it was my video I'm with you on that (except for the first short intro which is about as classy as I get) - the other bits, especially the Chicken sequence, were intended for humorous effect.....

I can revel in huge, bombastic music, but, I think, like you, appreciate elegance, subtlety, and sonic space even more.... if nothing else, even though they were masters of voicing, recording, and bodacious and dynamic sound, Pink Floyd were well-versed in creating the open vagaries between their sounds - to the effect that our own mental creativity created worlds of experience. Lovely stuff.

No Gene, I liked the music on your video particularly the piano and cello at the intro it really sets the pace and then it really builds with the piano and strings in the background, very sympathetic, and like way it runs into the fast pace of the POV shots. The power of the machines is superb and quiet sad with the chicken in the background, followed by the devastation of the landscape. This then becomes hopefully optimistic with the electronic keyboard but still contains an air of ominous feeling but with hope, signing off with a nice shot of sunlight.

Appreciate what you say about Floyd, and refer, somewhat off topic, to Miles Davies, who spoke about not the notes you play but what the spaces between the notes.

Peace is with you brother and through this short piece of work you have spread the word.

Many thanks for sharing your inspiration.

Bill
