5D MKII and Adobe Premier Pro CS3

RekindlePhoto 29 May 2009 04:39
Ok guys and gals ... just got the new camera and now need to learn like a newby again. Anyone using the MKII and Premier Pro CS3? If so give me a hand on new project settings and saving settings. No need to learn if ya'll have got smarter than me in the last month or so.

Thanks,
Don

I edit mine in After Effects.
But I convert it to a 10 bit AVI using New Scene first. Makes it much easier to edit in Windows.

I see NS is only about $130 so maybe I should get it. I tried using Quicktime Pro and it also seemed to work ...kinda. With NS can you crop to length or is it really just a conversion program? Do you just drag the CF Card file into it then process then open in AE to process the rest. I also assume you still process to P JPEG and not leave it in any original codec? I was able to drop the CF file into Premier Pro CS3 and process a clip. By dropping the file directly into PP CS3 it is a choppy play and review, kinda hard to really use. So if I use NS first then my PC should be able to handle it smoothly to process to P JPEG? Dang I hate being a newbie again ... that was over a couple years ago I thought ;). Jake the database worked great!

Thanks,
Don

I just saw what I wrote, it was early....
It's Neo Scene, not new scene. LOL

anyway, the raw file is so big that's why its choppy. Converting to the Neo Scene AVI makes it much easier to work with. I can import it in AE and scrub through the scene it real time.
I use the Neo Scene program to capture and convert right from the CF card.
Then import to AE, do whatever I need and save as quicktime PhotoJPG

Neo Scene is only a file converter, it dosen't edit anything.
I think you can download a trial copy to see if it works for you.

Glad the database worked.

Can CS3 work with the avchd, or do you have to use the converter? I guess if you just drop and put them in will it let you and then it just runs really choppy? or will it not support it at all?

I just dl'd the test of Neo Scene. Dang ... another step to slow things down. Sure was easier with HDV directly in Premier Pro CS3. Now I still can't figure out how to start a project in PP CS3, what settings to start new project to input the .avi file from Neo? Also AE CS3 keeps crashing so no help there ... tearing hair out!

Yup Premier Pro CS3 is an easier and bettr processor than After Effects for stock. Probably 5 to 10 times faster and easier adjust colors, shadows, brightness etc etc. The export is many times faster to M JPEG or P JPEG. Very frustrating trying to get the new Canon 5D MKII clips to process as quickly as HDV does. I'll keep tryin ;)

My workflow is to use VirtualDub to import the files from my SDHC card and save them as RAW uncompressed AVI on an external 1TB USB hard drive. I just put the SDHC card into a card reader in my computer, load up VirtualDub and do a batch process of all the files on the card. I can then load the raw AVI files into After Effects CS4 for processing.

I have a 3.2 GHz Phenom II processor and 16 GB of RAM. So I don't have any problems with choppiness or skipping.

Once I've processed all the clips, I archive the original camera files to DVDR (I use 8 GB SDHC cards so that the whole batch fits on a single DL media) and delete the RAW files from the USB drive to make room for the next batch.

Have you thought of going to cs4? you can do the avchd in there with not many issues (just slow down when watching preview)

I agree with Dave. Once the raw video is converted to an AVI you won't have any choppy play back.

a video takes me about 6 or so minutes from importing in AE to finished render.
Depending on what I'm doing, layers, color correction etc.
