Nikon finally releases a camera with 1080p, the D3100.

It's got continuous focus while shooting video which is darn nice. And it's priced $200 lower than the Canon T2i. Two more huge pluses.
But, it only does 24 fps at 1080p. No support for 60 fps at 720p. And stills are only 14 megapixel.
However, if you're a NIkon user with Nikon lenses, this looks to be a great camera upgrade at a great price.
Not worth switching from Canon. And if I were buying my first DSLR, I'd still pay another $200 for the T2i to get 18 megapixel stills, 30/25 fps @ 1080p and 60/50 fps @ 720p. Well worth the extra money for stock work.

Seems they can't get to 30fps for some reason.
Like you pointed out. 24fps would be great for film and indie people but not so much for stock.
It will be very interesting in what Canon comes out with.

Depending on how good it is, the continuous auto-focus is a damn nice feature. But not if it requires special lenses.
Scott Bourne talks about how much better H.264 is than MJPEG, but the GH1 hackers show that MJPEG can kick H.264's rear if done right. Scott's a great photographer, but I don't think he gets the vDSLR world.
Supposedly end of August/beginning of September is the traditional time for Canon announcements. The next month is gonna be interesting.

I think this camera is 1080p 24fps AVCHD @ 17 mbs. If this is so, the cheap Lumix FZ100 may beat it, but it has much better looks than the T2i.

Bring on the auto focus Canon ... please
Nikon is still a wan-a-be, they just can't seem to break into the full HD on dslr. Not much of a boost on the video side.

Shame on Nikon, even the ultra cheap Sanyo Xacti SH1 can do full HD 1080i @ 60fps at 17 mbs. They better come up with a firmware update pronto!

They will get there... this is a baby step, but it is going the right way. Not enough to make me go buy a nikon, I just got the t2i. I really like the canon because I know the limitations of it, and how hard I can push it and still get things accepted. I feel like with the nikon it would all be a new learning curve. And will we have manual controls on this thing, that would be the big killer.. AGAIN.

Looks good if you are an indie filmmaker or hockey mom... But only if you don't have any existing lenses for non-Nikon cameras. But the lack of 30/25 fps at 1080p makes it less appealing for doing stock work.
Not to mention it's AVCHD lite at 17mbs, not the full 24mbs AVCHD.

AVCHD blows anyway.
Notice the auto settings on the girl in the car. I really hope they have manual for this thing... well I don't really care because I won't be buying it :-)
My 5mp does full HD, at 1 frame per 3 seconds.
