I asked P5 about QT / PJPEG versus h.264/MP4 file, here is there answer:

"When we viewed the pieces, we didn't see enough difference in quality to affect the content.
The larger file sizes can turn buyers away because slower internet connections may not want to wait for the "xxxxxx" version at 1.7 GB. We would suggest the .mp4 version simply because of file size.
It is completely up to you, but the more manageable file would be our suggestion. Hope this helps!"

"Mark, do you think it's worth it to change the camera every year and redo the work + traveling cost (in my case) again and again with different camera just because the quality was not good enough in the first place?"

I would not post anything here or anywhere else that I thought poor in quality. Would I change cameras to improve quality, even if what I had already was of acceptable quality? Of course. Wouldn't you?

Totally agree. The more we can future proof our footage the better it is. Indeed older clips from older cameras will continue to sell but at a reduced rate over time. All it takes is looking here at P5 and the millions of choices buyers have, it will move to technology and not price. The better the subject shot with the more capable the camera will future proof sales longer. If it means replacing $5000 cameras every year or two it does make sense; not to re-do old work but adventure into new and better subjects.

I was told through P5 support today that there are no plans to downsize 4K to HD. A few years ago P5 said there were plans, guess not any more. I really see no value on downsizing HD to SD or web. I do see great value in downsizing 4K to HD and let the artist set pricing in both sizes. It would save a great deal on transfer and storage costs since HD and 4K are such large files. Storage is getting cheaper but internet upload speeds are not improving in much of the world.

Once the workflow problems are overcome, and some of you guys seem to be pioneers here; there are two things come to mind; one is that the majority of clients are previewing clips on 1K monitors; and secondly that the quality of previews on P5 is not brilliant to put it mildly. P5 need to look at ways to improve the quality of clients experience when previewing of all clips, while maintaining security, while the former will no doubt fall into place in the course of time.

From contact with P5 it appears they do not have any 4K monitors for curation. We are sending hopefully great quality 4K footage and the review curation is on HD monitors like we are using. Like others have said, we are at the beginning of 4K as far as stock is concerned. Great to get a head start though.

I just got a Sony AX-1 and I'm having some questions about the level of noise/artifacting in the shots that include blue sky. It's not just noise but a lot of grungy little black dots. Here's a link to 100% crop of the sky:

Is this the kind of noise others are seeing at 100% in the Sony cams or have I got a bigger problem?

Exactly the same I believe all Sony AX1 and Z-100 are getting. I'm now tending to believe that at 100% view 4K is equivalent to 400% view when using an HD monitor with an HD clip. SS and P5 are having no issues with approving. I had the same concern with same view with my Z-100. I guess we have got to get a 4K monitor or learn to accept it as normal.

It's kinda good to see the AX-1 is the same ;)

Thanks for the quick reply! I got the camera the day before leaving on a trip (okay, not the best planning :) and didn't have much of a chance to test it out. Got home yesterday and started looking at the clips today and got kinda freaked out when I saw the crunchy looking sky.

So this is the same result everyone is getting with the pz100 and ax1? You're right, it looks like I'm viewing it at 400%!! I can clean a lot of it up with neat video but a) what a pain to have to use that for every sky shot and b) even with neat video I still am getting some little black artifacts appearing and disappearing.

4K is 8.3 million pixels, our HD monitors can only display 2.2 million. Need to update the monitors I think…
