Great news! The Canon 5D Mark III saves now detailed shooting information in MOV footage clips!

I don't have this camera but think that meta data for video are stored in .THM files. If not, can you explain what format of .MOV files supports embedded meta data?

Metadata and thumbnails

Thankfully both video thumbnails and metadata are now stored by the camera in .THM files.

@Zygis, you are absolute right! Metadata has been stored in the accompanying .thm files way back when the 5d mk II and 7d was introduced.
As long as you store the exact catalog structure from the card as a backup on a disk you will have this information at your hands.

Just checked: The 5D Mark III does not write the THM files anymore. Everything is now embedded in the MOV file. I find this very cool because it's easier to retrieve shooting information without bothering with accompanying files when archived.

I can add the other metadata like title, description, keywords... for the agencies with Adobe Bridge directly into the MOV clip. Then everything is in one file. Perfect for archiving or when searching for specific cilps.

The T3i doesn't have .thm files anymore! I was angry when I found this out, because they were very helpful... you could rename to .jpg, have the thumb and right click and get your video settings that were used... not anymore :-(

Maybe the data is also in the MOV file. Check it out with Canon DPP Software.

I've also opened a Mk3 MOV file with a Hex Editor to see if I can read the shooting information. The data is saved unencrypted in the header of the file. So it might be possible that in next CS6 update we can read it directly with Bridge and other software that supports metadata.

following on from reading this post i did a test and saved keywords and description into a video in bridge and uploaded it to some different sites. in pond the keys came up which was great, but not in other sites..

does anyone have any luck getting metadata directly into other sites from being embedded in the video itself, as with photos for stock...?

Some time ago I've contacted some other sites and asked if they can update their system to work with metadata embedded in clips. Revo answered and made it work! The others are work in progress.

For sites who don't support this I have a plugin for Bridge that extracts the metadata from the clips with one click directly to a CSV file.
