Snowfall download has matte but shouldnt

Hi, anybody have a tip on why a snowfall matte that was described as not having a matte actually does have a black matte? Version is a 1080p video overlay (after effects)

If you mean it has a "luma" matte, in AE, you have to place the B/W portion of the clip ABOVE the first part so the action is lined up and matching.

Then, in the lower layer, turn on the track matte option: "Luma Matte 'layer name'".

The B/W portion MUST be right above the main clip's layer.

Hope that helps. Sort of hard to explain in text form.

Thanks for the reply, I'm actually in premiere pro (cs5) and have not edited in AE yet. Is there anyway to accomplish this in PP that you know of or do I have to edit the clip in AE and export to PP?

I think you do the same in PPro using the "set matte" effect.

I'll give it a whirl, much appreciated!

@pixellabdesigns,

I believe that part of a clip's description info (Matte: Yes/No) is referring to an embedded alpha channel within the clip. As in a 32-bit clip.

What I think you have is the alpha channel of the clip being rendered and attached to the end of the clip's RGB render. This is done when a clip is delivered in a codec such as PhotoJPEG which doesn't allow for an embedded alpha channel.

You would then split the clip and build a track matte with the RGB version and the Alpha version in your compositing app or NLE as @ODesigns described.
