famous composers

hi.

is it legal on this site to sell famous composers' music as if it was your own composition?

i see a lot of people sell chopin, mozart, beethoven etc music, and collect the money as if they composed it.

i doesnt seem fair to me, that someone has 50 sales on someone else's music, while other people make their own compositions and have only 5 sales....

whats the idea behind that??

anybody can take a famous composition, run the midi through some fancy plugin vst, and sell it for big bucks, and make reallly easy money.

pond5, is this legal???
when i read the rules of posting clips, it didnt seem that this would be allowed.

so, which is it, pond5?

It's not allowed to upload work that isn't yours.

Give some examples please

I guess you are talking about public domain songs. I can't provide legal advice but as far as I know anybody can use these compositions. Be sure to check the wikipedia article about public domain.

i read on google that its ok to sell the public domain music....so apparently its no problem.

however, i still find it to be a moral injustice...in regards to people that actually compose their music and not use others'

It's not safe to assume that any public domain song is safe to use for your own royalty free work. There may be copyright owners of particular arrangements of public domain pieces. Be safe, find as much documentation as you can to support the free use of any public domain work if you intend to use for your own RF work.

I think it's really cheap to sell music that someone else has written... At least I find it morally very despicable. But I guess some people do anything for just some money! :P I hope the ghost of Mozart will haunt them or something... :D

Has anyone sent pond5 a email about the offenders ?
They need to be taken offline.

And pond5 shouldn't take public domain work.
Actually I think they said they won't accept it.

Public domain recordings of music composed by the classic masters are absolutely okay! Do you really think every orchestra in the world should be paying a fee to Mozart's widow or something?
If today's music creators would produce more work that is comparable to the classic masters they wouldn't have any problems selling it.

actually they would (have problems).
if i was to buy a piece of classical music for some video, and i was offered two options of equal quality, i would choose the cheaper one. and public domain is free or cheap.
on rf sites, public domain is cheaper because not of the quality, but because the uploader knows he didnt actually compose it and canot sell it at a high price. however someone who makes a piece like moon sonata will sell it like for 100 bucks or something (on rf sites), if he knows his value... but will not get sold, cuz of the guy who uploaded the real moonlight sonata for practicaly free..
