Too bad it doesn't have 1280x720 60p

looks like they finally got around to being competitive. 1920x1080P at 30 fps was the biggest issue they needed to get, now they have it Nikon is now a player again.

They are getting there. As someone who is shooting HD Television news for a living with a DSLR, I can say I almost bought a Nikon the other day because it has one thing that is a glaring omission with the Canon - a headphone jack. But without 1080p30, the deal was dead. I also liked the nikon's dual sdhc card slots.

This new camera, sadly, has neither. Guess I'll stick with the 60d for the time being.

It also packages its videos as MP4's. Would P5 accept video from this camera without re-packaging?

I have uploaded MP4 clips direct from the my small camera to P5. They have never been rejected. Benefits: faster upload, less disk storage space, longer clips, and quality is not affected by re-packing from mp4 to mov (h.264). Example:

I have not sold yet any mp4 clips of the few I have but I am starting to sell the ones I re-packed from mp4 to mov AVC/h.264 at 100% quality. Remember I am using a Xacti HF1 shooting 60p at 24mbs which must have a lot less sharpness than a Nikon D5100.

I have seen quite a few MP4 clips sold in P5. A 20 sec. 50 mb mp4 files turns into an 85-100 mbytes file after converting to mov AVC/h.264.

According to the specs the D5100 offers Auto Focus during video recording, a plus over the T3i and 60D, and shoots 1080/30p (although bitrate is unknown). Have to check if the D5100 offers an earphone plug and volume gain control.

I am sure Nikon will improve all their more expensive vDSLR cameras.

holy cow...who screwed up the audio on that video! The music was super overbearing!

Anyway, i wonder if the remote release has a video button - that would be very nice. still like to know if there's a way to monitor audio.

Also, anyone have an idea about whether it'll overheat like the Canons during long video clip recording?

This review shows a close-up of the mic input connector. No dedicated audio output seeing unless you can monitor the audio from the video a/v cable. It also does not show if audio levels are controllable....but that auto-focus feature is just so nice to have. The Nikon mic seems to have a knob to control volume.
