berkley, your correct the ex1 has it's own card slots. The HVRMRC1 fits directly to both the Z5U and Z7. The HVRMRC1K can be attach to any HD or DVcam that has a firewire input and it mounts to the cold shoe of the camera it also requires NP-F970 Li-Ion battery.

BTW its not entirely impossible to resurect a dead drive, sometimes you can "fix" it long enough to recapture data.

For people not having unlimited time to tweak a OpenBSD/Linux box, the only warm recommendation I've got for a NAS is Netgear readynas. Reviews can be forged, but I found no http://www.amazon.com/review/RXW3J8B8VGLKJ/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm

I'm thinking of one of those myself.

interesting, I knew network drives existed, like at college or offices, but I was unaware of how that was set up. That would be a good way to backup files.

Just saw COSTCO has Free Agent 1.5 tb external HD for $139. Not bad at all.

If I lose 10 gigs it is stuff I can rerip from tapes. I would not be happy... but not devastated :-)
