Recording direct to PC

Hey guys,

If I were to hook up my fx1000 or hv30 directly to the firewire, then go into capture in CS3, would the quality be the same as if it were recorded to tape first, then converted to pc? I was thinking about trying this for some tabletop stock shots.

Or what about direct to HDMI with a capture card, is the quality much better?

I don't really know but I would think it would be the same quality.
If you think about it, wouldn't it be the same as capturing to one of those hard drive devices that connects to the camera.

Do you have a HDMI capture card and does CS3 recognize capturing from that port? It may only see the firewire, but I don't think you'll get any better quality from the HDMI or firewire.
The HDMI may view better on a HD monitor but the capture is still HDV.

Just speculation on my part.

Hi!

You can capture directly from camcorder to PC via firewire using the Adobe OnLocation software. It is a beautiful peace of software and I like it very much because you can trigger your capture by changes in a video. One problem is that OnLocation supports only camcorders which uses DV tapes (does not support camcorders writing to HD or RAM).

For example, these clips were captured using Adobe OnLocation:

appearance of a bird triggered capture:

All rotating clips on a dolly were captured using OnLocation, like this:

I have captured directly to Sony Vegas Studio 9 It is exactly what would go to tape. Just put the camera in camera mode and hit the capture button. The FX1000 does all its processing HD at 1920x1080 then down converts to 1440x1080 for tape. If you dont want the 1440x1080 non square pixels you will have to use the HDMI and a capture device.

Note that I could not get the camera to work with Premiere CS3 but did not try any of the other packagags that are part of CS3 extended.

When connected as a camera is shows up different then when connected as a VCR. This is so the app can use different controls.

Thanks Zygis, I will have to try this out :-)
Thanks Msimpson too

So are you saying if you connect the FX1000 to a hdmi port and capture through that, the video will be full 1920 instead of 1440?

Jake!

If you want to capture full HD, then in PC/Mac should be a special capture card installed, like this: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/hd/

You're a wealth of knowledge Zygis.
That is a cool card. The $995 price is a little much right now but I will keep that in mind when I upgrade my PC.

There is a free program called capdvhs for capturing, go into edit mode on your camera, start capturing on capdvhs then switch the camera to camera mode and it will record live directly to PC.
