Modern Camcorders

I'm looking at getting a decent HD Camcorder for my step-daughter who wants to shoot short films.

Do all of the Camcorders today encode in AVCHD, or do any of them record in MOV or MP4?

I know my old Sony shoots AVCHD, but I'm not sure about other brands.
