A Canon 7D Killer?

My "first look" review of the T2i on iSyndica:

just got word from Opteka:

"We will have the T2i grip and LP-E8 batteries in 45-60 days."

Just an FYI

After I earn some money with my T2i I'm going to buy that grip for sure. Approx. 25 more hours before the t2i + Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L + LCDVF arrive at my door.... SO EXCITED!

Congratulations... I am absolutely loving mine.

I would definitely get a second battery. And I would recommend a car AC/DC converter. I keep my chargers plugged in when I am out shooting and keep one battery charging while I shoot. When my battery dies, I swap batteries putting the dead one on the charger. That way I never have battery issues when out and about.

Even from this article from Canon they can't be honest on the actual frame rates. They say 30 and then put 29.97 in brackets and 24 then 23.97 in brackets. From the 5D MKII side it appears they are now 30fps and the firmware will put it to a fixed 29.97 fps.
From this article it really emphasizes that the T2i is a consumer camera not a professional grade camera. Just think about the shutter life at 100,000 versus 150,000 for the 7D. 100,000 shutter activations is really not that many. The better photo quality on the 7D, the weather / dust proofing on the 7D. I still see the 7D as a better value dollar wise. A used 7D will hold it's value for resale better, the T2i will have little resale value. I agree that Canon releasing the T2i with so many high quality video features is a slap in the face to the professional who has bought into the 5D MKII and 7D. Still the T2i is not a 7D killer, it just doesn't stack up even at $800 less.

Don, it sounds like you are a bit peeved that Canon would release such a camera. The simple fact is that due to the fierce competition, the fact that everyone is under price pressure and yet they still demand functionality this simply happens, has happened and will continue happening. You can come up with all kinds of reasons why this camera vs prior models may not be as good. But the bottom line is your reasoning holds no water at this juncture. It's simply the way life goes. Deal with it. Even if the T2i crapped out at 100K shutters, and even if it let some dust in... it is still cost effective to simply replace it. Unfortunately the world has become a throw away society. - But when it comes to output - picture quality etc... this camera is more than enough for stock. It far surpasses many cameras that cost thousands just a few years ago. Now if you can prove to me that people's eyes have improved and that they can see the difference when they watch the boob tube or are in a theater - only then will your statements deserve merit. But until that happens, why not just grin and bear it? Stop trying to make people feel bad that ordered or have already received this camera. It is totally counterproductive and serves no purpose. Perhaps this thread should have been titled differently, that may be true - but at this point this topic has now been beaten to death. Don't you think?

It seems that many here really are bashing the 7D as over priced based on the T2i. All I was saying is that the 7D is not killed by the T2i. There is a place for both. I totally agree that in this market Canon has done a great job at hurting Nikon and others. Many here and elsewhere are pushing the T2i as the dream camera that everyone should get and forget about the 7D. I just pointed out that based on "quality" of construction, processing power, frames per second (real important in sports photography), weather/dust proofing shutter longevity etc etc, the T2i is not a 7D killer. I also agree that the T2i is more than capable for 90% or more of stock requirements. Heck last month I sold a phot from a Canon 20D for over $1200. I still sell a lot of video from the Canon HV-20. Absolutely the T2i os a very capable camera.

Bitter, no because I have neither the the T2i or 7D. I am studying the difference between them because I need to get a backup body, it will be one of them. There are a lot of people who bought the 5D MKII and then the 7D came out, same arguments. In fact the 7D other than the full size sensor is a camera with improvements, weather proofing is much better on the 7D than the MKII.

What I was saying and also using in my decision thought is more than just the video capabilities. There are many other things that are different other than video capabilities. Ya maybe the thread should have been named something else. It's only my opinion (before I buy one of them) that the T2i is not a 7D killer. I and others need to look at more than video specs. I do respect your feelings on the T2i and congrats for getting it, I might also, it will serve you and others very well.

I have to say I heard that the noise on the t2 is pretty high at 600ish? Is that true? That could be a noticable difference with the 7d. Indoor shooting may require some brighter lighting. Maybe the gain is scaled differently.

Im not saying that Don is bashing other peoples cameras, but
I don't like it when people with super expensive (or cheaper) cameras blindly discount or bash other peoples cameras. If you ever mozy on over to that DSLR film makers site or Reds forums you will see what im talking about. There is no logic to most of their arguments, they say one camera IS better than another and they give very little rationale. Why is it better? Because you paid more for it? I don't know, if I had a film camera or a red camera I would probably sell it now.

I'm definitely not bashing the T2i or it's owners. I might get one as a backup body. I have heard the same, the video is really the same but on the photo side it's not quite as good in noise and dark. Maybe it's due to the dual processors the 7D. Price is never an indication of what is "the best", so the 7D at about $800 more does not make it better. I like to ear things out from lots of use, from all indications the 7D will last longer. For video and general stock, either will do a great job.
