Description:
A clear solution containing KIO3 (potassium iodate) is poured into an empty beaker. Added to that beaker is some solution containing starch, NaHSO3 (sodium bisulfite) and H2SO4 (sulfuric acid). The iodate reacts with the bisulfite ion to produce the iodide ion. Then the iodide ion reacts with the bisulfite ion to form I2 (iodine). The iodine reacts with the starch to form the dark blue color.
