Odyssey 7Q - reviews, examples, etc

Anyone else have one of these things?

I just got mine from B&H today, but I'm leaving to go to mardi gras for a few days, so I won't get to play with it.

The 4k firmware is said to come out by the end of this month, that's the 4k RAW that the sony recorder is also recording. I guess they worked a deal to get full RAW, where before it was some other sort of 4k, YCC or something. Not familiar with it :-)

Anyway, let's chat about this beast of a recorder/monitor. I hooked it up today and played with it a little, with the wall AC power. I ordered a sony L-series battery plate for it, but that was on back order so hopefully it will be here when I return home.
The picture is beautiful, the thing is really light too. I'll post some pics of how I have it mounted. That's without the sony battery that will also be on it, so that will be another few ounces or so. I've been fairly active in the dvxforums for the fs700, there's a lot of good info there and examples of 2k RAW. It's sexy...

All together price wise it is about $4000, thats unit, 2 hdd, and the upgrade things from CD for the fs700 raw recording.

Cool Scott - really looking forward to hearing more after you've used it in the field and other observations. One thing I'm really curious about is whether it will/can replace the SmallHD monitor/Loupe I've got on my FS700 - I have not seen a loupe/viewfinder scenario for the 7Q, and last thing I need is for the FS700 rig to get bigger/heavier/more wind resistant/take more batteries!

So the FS700 upgrade cost from Sony is separate?

Cool on the 4K RAW - likely I'd not use that often, but certain times I would for sure. Have you figured out for sure what teh high frame rate and resolution limitations are?

OK, enough for now...have fun at Mardi Gras!

Scott can you tell me is that 7Q with their upgrade alow you to record 4k?
What do you need to shot 4k with that 7Q?

I`m thinking about jumping to 4k train, but instead of buying new camera i want to upgrade my fs700.

To shoot 4k you have to buy a 7q and then pay for the fs700 raw option from CD

It's all together I think right around 3500$

I'll let you know more as I get it setup this week :)

Maybe this will help:

The numbers are a little off on that site jason. The upgrade is only $750 from CD.

I started shooting a little with it and WOW it is a different beast. The SDI cable I bought wasn't rated for the data transfer and I was getting dropped frames, or frames with weird colors. So I'm ordering the right one on monday :-). So far the footage looks sexy and the dynamic range and RAW 2k is really attractive so far. I don't like shooting in SLOG2 though, especially without the LUT on the O7Q yet, it's hard to judge the shot.

Curious - can you shoot in AVCHD onboard and 2K RAW simultaneously? Reason: See how the dynamic range of the sensor is interpreted and expressed by the capabilities and limitations of each, for a proper 1:1 comparison.

Love to see some shots soon! You have fun?

Yes, you can do both recordings at the same time. I tried it, but ended up not using the 2k because of issues with the cable. I did use the AVCHD files, so this was a good example of when recording both would have been a life saver.

So its like on a still camera shooting RAW + JPG at the same time?
It just takes up more room on the SSD correct?
dapoopta 10 Mar 2014 02:15
Yes, it is similar, except it is internally recording AVCHD to SD card, and the RAW to SSD. So it is recordings its regular 1080p stream as if the external recorder was not with it.
