H264 or H265

@GSfootageUK: "I have asked support about it and maybe if they have a way to swap the clips over"

Support replied and told me there is no way to replace a clip with a new version. They said to re-upload the new version with a different filename, copy the metadata across, then put a note to the curator of which clip it's replacing. They also said they'd be able to transfer sales data (I assume that includes any view data too?). So presumably putting that note to the curator would be sufficient for them to do that without emailing to ask.

Personally I'm not too worried if the data isn't copied over, as I've not been doing this long enough so don't have many sales anyway.

@GSfootageUK - Thanks - good info and thanks for sharing.

You're welcome PCDMedia.

I've spent many hours since my last post re-rendering and uploading about 40 clips, and I'm struggling. It's such dull and laborious work, waiting for the render, uploading taking hours, copying metadata then leaving a message for the curator, lots of copy/pasting, etc.. Is it really worth it? I'll probably do some more now and then but I think it's best I concentrate on my next batch of new footage instead.

I suspect that without some good indicator of which current clips we have on P5 to resubmit it's likely a crap shoot which would benefit from the time/effort to resubmit with a different codec, etc.

DNxHR or ProRes create some large files when wanting to submit 4:2:2 10 bit files. I'm tinkering around trying to optimize for the least huge file size. Other than clips that aren't so long I doubt there's anything much that can be done.

What do buyers want? Prores, Mov/Photojpg, DNxHR, or MP4???? What frame rate 60p/48p .... or 29.97/24p ???? What bitrate 150,200,300,400,600,800+? .... the GH6 goes all the way to 1.9 Gbps at 5.7k ProRes.

@Mizamook ..... export prores in Davinci PC - https://youtu.be/unxgrbYpjj0

But only with Davinci Resolve Studio (paid) version for PC.

The freebie Resolve doesn't support plugins (Vokouder).

@PCDMedia "But only with Davinci Resolve Studio (paid) version for PC."

It's worth paying for, it's only $295 and that includes future versions. The paid version allows you to work in 10 bit and HDR which is pretty substantial, it has a lot of advanced features for things like noise reduction. Of course if you're gonna be color grading, well I remember when facilities I worked with were paying $100,000 for a DaVinci system back in the day, 295 US is a heck of a deal, and that includes Fusion and Fairlight, and two different editing interfaces....

@Aleatoric said " I cannot find anything relating ProRes to h.264."

DOH, I was obviously typing too fast, I meant to type DCT not h264... thanks, edited.
Both ProRes and h264 are DCT based codecs (as opposed wavelet).

Here's a white paper on ProRes, it's quite in-depth and I think answers some questions here.

@Aleatoric said "I thought h.264 was limited as such to 8-bit 4.2.0"

AVC/h.264 is just a class of codec with a number of varieties/flavors. Here's a chart: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Video_Coding#Feature_support_in_particular_profiles

@GSfootageUK "I have the Mini 3 Pro and the 10-bit files are H.265. My understanding is there's no way H.264 can be 10-bit."

I also have a Mini 3 Pro and I shoot in 24fps 10bit h264 D-Cinelike.

The fact that I shoot in 24 FPS is relevant, I see that you shoot at 30fps, and perhaps that's where they split and start forcing h265. Definitely the Mini 3 Pro is forced to h265 at 48 fps and higher, I was under the impression that 30 could do h264 a 10 bit.

h264 does have 10bit profiles like Hi10P
