4K versus HD

@trucic: I guess small agency with low budget, they love the video concept but don't have enough budget. It just my opinion, I don't know the fact. I hope pond5 give survey for the buyer about HD,4K, HD resized from 4K quality and post it to the blog or forum.

I have a clip uploaded in prores 1.5GB and in H264 at 1.4GB. The same clip in HD prores at 417.4MBs

@ trucic I would say that the MBs for this clip #139444138 in HD is an error and nothing less. Why not ask support to check it out and not make an issue out of it here until you have an answer from support.

...@jason, I tried that few months ago and nothing happened... problem still exists...
I left a link for files of Pond5 library sorted as newest... all Prores files are converted with this issue... also, 4K h264 are in same problem, but with less compression ratio after being converted to h264...

@jason... please check HD version size of this file...

Hey folks,

Our system automatically downconverts files as they come in, and some files are compressed more heavily than others based on the original specs of the file. Small clips that are mostly static scenes are most affected by the compression.
We have raised this compression issue with our team so they're aware of the compression potentially being too heavy, and they will look into it.

Rest assured, there's no overwhelming evidence that smaller file sizes deter buyers. The majority of our buyers do indeed purchase 1080p videos, so considering the volume of transactions and the tiny number people who contact us about this, it does not appear to be an issue for most buyers.

That said, if there are buyers who are unsure about the file size (they do write in from time to time), we usually do a manual conversion for them with less compression and send it over.

If you have any more questions, please email support@pond5.com and we'll be more than happy to help!

@Rayan, but who is going to buy 1920x1080 FullHD footage ~1MB big, resized from 500MB Prores...? It seems that only Prores is affected with extreme compression, PhotoJPG are ok as I can see... even h264 FullHD from h264 4K looks better...
trucic 23 Mar 2021 11:16
This still is not considered as a problem...? I§m experiencing record in low views and sales... FullHD sizes from down-converted 4k PRORES files are like highly compressed JPGs, few MBs and in some case KB... Please consider this as urgent, because it IS...

I've just checked my latest Prores 4k uploads at Pond5, and they're all showing single megabyte figures if the buyer opts for HD.

POND5 CONVERSION FROM 4K PRORES TO HD H.264.
First column is the HD file size, followed by the original 4k Prores:
1.9 580.7
6.8 650.8
3.2 596.0
2.2 590.0
8.8 652.7
2.0 619.3
4.9 648.5
2.2 602.9
5.9 669.7
7.4 585.7

Clearly, those buyers who want to maintain the integrity of Prores, are going to have to pay for the 4k version. However, this is the same for Adobestock and Shutterstock, whereby Prores 4k is automatically downconverted to H.264 for the HD version of the same file.

Nevertheless, with AS and SS, the downconvert is nowhere near as drastic as it is at Pond5. This means that rather than the single figure HD files which Pond5 ends with after downconvert from 4k, they're tens of MBs at AS and SS.

It doesn't seem as though much thought has gone into this at Pond5, because although buyers might not noticeably complain about receiving single figure HD files from downconverted 4k, they might well notice that if they try and edit such a heavily compressed file, quality of final output will suffer. After all, codecs are about the tradeoff between filesize and quality loss, so to automatically crush the life out of the downconverted file, seems daft.

Indeed, if it's deemed OK to sell HD video at single figure megabytes, after being downconverted from 4k, then why not do that across the board with all HD files, if the perception is that few buyers will notice or care?

Hmm, I guess I never thought of how much the compression is here.
I checked a couple of my videos from 4k and one was 22 meg the other was 4.4 meg
Same two on Adobe are over 150 meg

I never checked Shutterstock since just thinking of them makes my blood pressure rise.

It is a problem and lasts for awhile... I have discussed about this with support and wrote here, but this have not took place for consideration... Adobe and other partner sites will take advantage because of this, especially when someone seeks for HD version... Pond5 and contributors take a share of a price there if someone decides to buy same bigger file on partner sites because of size... I do not wanna think that only solution is to put a 4K file price here to FullHD standard or less...
