My first tests of the Canon 5D

I kno it shoots 30p, what I meant when I said that was that it can do both.

Unfortunately canon doesn't have much incentive to add features when they are selling so much. :(

It does have enough memory. THEORETICALLY If you were to decrypt the fir file (from the canon website) with a xor decryptor, then opened the code with a hex editor. You could disable some of the autofunctions in the HD mode section by replacing certain TRUE statements with some 4 character expression that equals zero. ie "1(0)"

Here is a very fast pan with the 5D. The encoder codec on vimeo does not do it justace so you can download the original if you want. I was only capturing each frame at about 1/120 of a second so its pretty smooth as compared to other H264 cameras I have used.

Michael,
How do you find the camera doing with highlights.
Is it hard to adjust exposure to not get blown out highlights?

Also the H264 I've heard is really compressed, do you find any artifacting viewing full size as compared to a mpg2 camera?

Thanks,
Jake

Jake because the sensor size is equal to a 35mm film camera, it has better http://wiki.panotools.org/Dynamic_range.

Although yes you can get overblown highlights, its harder to do than with a video camera.

The compression is more efficient, I was able to key it out without any problems, that should tell a lot about the number of artifacts. I compared the 5ds footage to 2k film and I think the 5d is better, I will upload stills.

Thanks for the response. I also asked the same question in your forum post. (trying to get two different tests)
Just disregard that one.

You can blowout highlights but you have to lock the exposure to do it.

Here you can see they were blowen to hell. I had to addust the exposure nad lock it to get the tiny webs.

webs

As far as artifacting goes all is not equal with H264. I have tried many and the 5D is pretty good. For instance the HF100 shows more in the same kind of shot. It probably has to do with processor power and how much time that proccessor gets to act on each frame. What you see more than artifacts with H264 is more like when you run a grainy image through noise reduction software.
