Title: Nocturne in Bbm, Op. 9 no. 1
Frédéric Chopin wrote his Nocturnes, Op. 9 from 1830 to 1832, the year when they were published. They are dedicated to Madame Camille Pleyel, and since their first edition they have become obligatory repertoire items for pianists. The Nocturne no. 1 in B flat minor, marked larghetto, displays a rhythmic freedom in the right hand that came to be characteristic of Chopin's later work: while the left hand goes through an unbroken string of crochet arpeggios, the melody moves freely, making use of irregular patterns of seven, eleven, twenty, and twenty two notes. The middle section develops in the relative major, and features a contrasting theme, much more structured in terms of rhythm. The recapitulation concludes with a descending scale and a picardy third.
