Alternate Title: Poor Lazarus Hiking Jerry Every Mail Day Mule on the Mount Captain's Mule Stewboy

African Americans vocals Ethnography Music Sea chanties Work songs At sea, off Georgia coast

A sea chantey sung by the crew of The Boys, a 108-foot menhaden (or pogey) fishing boat of Mayport, Florida, commanded by Captain J. C. Willard. It was recorded at sea, while the crew pulled in the purse seine. The first line of each verse was sung by a single man, and the entire crew joined in on the last three lines. The sounds of the thousands of fish, known as menhaden or pogies, can be heard splashing around in the water. The sound quality of this recording is extremely poor. It has been included online because the melody line can still be identified.
