Description:
Title in Original Language: Vaka vanha Vainamoinen

Dust jacket notes inscribed by Sidney Robertson Cowell: "XL Runo, 221 and lines following. From the Kalevala, the great Finnish epic. These are the traditional melodies, of which 5 have been preserved, all variants of the same melody. The story chanted here is part of the account of the making of the kantele, of which Vainamoinen is the legendary inventor. I don't know why Mr. Soininen uses so many variants of this melody--other Kalevala singers I have heard stick to a single one. But I think Mr. S. probably has refreshed his memory from a book which gave several melodies in sequence. He did not realize he sang more than one melody. So, this may be a traditional manner of variation, cf. Icelandic recordings of Sigurd Bardarson, who combines several melodies in this way."

John Soininen, vocals.
