Title: Mazurka in C#m, Op. 50 no. 3
The Op. 50 mazurkas by are three pieces written and published in 1842. A typical performance of the whole set takes about eleven minutes. The third piece showcases Chopin's increased interest in counterpoint. After reading a 1837 counterpoint book by Cherubini, the mazurkas of the succesive opuses started displaying polyphonic writing. Chopin contrasted the delicacy and subtlety of the opening theme, expressed in the form of a canon, with the full, tempestuous sound of the mazur counter-theme. Two further motifs arise over the course of this work. The alternating pulsation of rhythms and tones of narration appears to be endless, yet everything here, from the very beginning, has been moving towards a final culminatio towards a contrapuntal, chromaticised stretto, rather odd in a mazurka, and its dramatic watershed, inflected with tragedy. The music then quietens and subsides, but does not die away.
