My New 4K monitor

Just got home with my new Samsung 28 inch 4K monitor. WOW! For such a low price the picture is incredible. The detail in 4K footage is amazing. After using a Samsung and Dell HD monitor for a while I'm pretty pleased and believe the added detail will help a lot in processing 4K clips.

Don, what graphics card are you using to drive it? Also, are you running one or two monitors?

What is the model number?

The model is Samsung U28D590D, 28 inch 3840x2160 UHD/4K at 60 refresh rate. My understanding is it doesn't work on Apple Mac only PC. To get 60 refresh yo need to run it through a Display Port. HDMI will only run 4K at 30. The response time is 1 ms so should be good for gamers also. SO far the only negative is the stand is very flimsy but workable. Does not adjust up or down and does not swivel.

The colors and contrast look great out of the box. Only connections are 2 HDMI and one Display Port.

I got it at Best Buy for $535 total. It lists for $599 and few places discount. I talked them into about ten percent discount and here in Utah there is no sales tax on video production equipment and supplies.

I'm running it with a Dell XPS , Win 8.1, i-7 4.0 Ghz, 24 Gb Ram and the video card is AMD Radeon HD R9 270. I'm running dual monitors with the 4K monitor and another 28 inch Samsung 1920x1080 monitor. The system is driving everything just fine with no lag or jerks.

So far very pleased.

I've just checked out some of the specs in UK. There seem to be various "modes" with the display which may or may not be useful.

I've copied some of the description:

Upscale to UHD
The U28D590DS automatically upscales all of your content to ensure it looks stunning on the Ultra HD display, complete with noise reduction and up-conversion to create clearer, sharper images.
Two Content Sources on One Screen
With Picture-in-Picture 2.0 technology, you can use your U28D590DS monitor to view content from two separate sources at once. It supports resolutions up to Full HD and won't downscale the content, so you can rely on high quality images on both pictures. In addition to PIP, Picture-by-Picture Mode will let you connect two PCs to the same monitor and divide the screen in two, so you can have all of the information you need in front of you at once.
One Touch Game Mode
The one touch Game Mode button adjusts your monitor's settings instantly to deliver an optimised gaming experience. It smartly detects the changes in scenes and enhances the colour and alters the screen's contrast to make dark spots darker and light spots lighter so you can see all the action at all times. Faster video response time ensure that there is less lag so the picture can keep up with the action.

I believe the "upscale to UHD" is when you view something less than UHD it upscales it to UHD. If it is native 4K then there is no upscaling needed. The resolution of the screen display is true 4k/UHD.

You can divide the screen into two virtual HD screens that operate as if it were two HD monitors. In the gaming mode you can set it to automatically determine what brightness and contrast is best. You can set it so there is not automatic changes.

The upscaling and gaming modes are a little confusing but when working in UHD/4K the display is truely UHD/4K screen resolution.

What happens when you view other 4K formats, like 4096x2304, 4096x2160 etc?
