Should I Get A 4K Camera Or 1080p?

bhonest2 15 Apr 2016 17:21
I am torn between getting a good 2014 1080p camera and a newer 4k camera. I am enticed by the savings on the 1080p. Is there a big trend for 4K in stock video? Thank you :-)

4K not yet. Look at Artists Resources and you will see 4K sales are only a very very small amount of total P5 sales. Advantage is the 4K is easily downsized to HD. HD will be the big sales size for many years to come. 4K add a big increase in other costs such as a more powerful computer, a lot more storage, faster internet for transfer. Also since 4K shows much more detail the technical aspects of shooting need to be more closely monitored. 4K does future proof you. Most people who want to shoot stock give up because it takes a long time to build a quality portfolio and start making a good profit. Decide on what your motivation and persistence is before spending a lot of money thinking you will cover costs soon.

I always buy my camera's with the future in mind. 4K will be the future and as rekindle said, it's easily downsized to 1080p.
Invest some more and get yourself a good 4k camera, eventually it will pay off.

Save your money, buy a 1080p camera now and use the heck out of it, and in 2 years when literally everything is 4K and just as affordable make the jump.

I love 4k but agree on the follow up costs for faster computer, better storage, faster internet requirements.

If you are on a tight budget I´d invest the money in education, take classes or do workshops to become a better shooter. Use hd to learn what niche you are really good in and learn what customers like to buy from you. Once you have found your niche, you can upgrade, maybe with a used gh4 or a bridge camera at first.

Better save the fee of course/workshop/classes and buy a camera to learn, there is tons of information and learning video in the internet!

@ bHonest2

Go for 4K compact now (Panasonic FZ1000 cost around $600 and cover from 24mm to 600mm) , it does not cost you a fortune when you have already a good enough computer to edit your clips. You can also edit with panasonic's free software for simple cutting, no need to buy an expensive software from Adobe.
Well when you priced your clip at $30/@ , then better give it up altogether because you will not make your invested-money back from this price.

If the future of pond5 is the membership program, then customers are learning to expect much lower prices per download. There are artists offering 500 dollar files for 8 dollars or less per download. That is much, much lower than the minimum pond5 has for 4k.

But it seems to work well for many, so to each his own.

There is a reason many people invest in a good education if they want to learn a trade. It all depends how far you want to go. Different artists have different goals. If selling simple editoral clips at 300 dollars works for some congrats! Doesn't mean we all have to do it.

Low prices does not do well. We have never heard from anyone here that sells low priced HD and makes $50K or more. Make chump change or make a living. Prices are not going down and buyers do not expect it. This week I sold several HD clips for $199. Don't believe the doom and gloom race to the bottom. Sell for what you want, sell low and never have great cameras and equipment, sell for fair prices (use Shutterstock Footage as an example) and travel, have great equipment and have a good income. For any one person selling HD for $30 or less there are a dozen or hundred that sell for $59-199 and make far better money. You decide, a charity to commercial buyers or take care of yourself and family. The race to the bottom is by Artists with poor sales ... must be a reason.

I don´t believe in a race to the bottom, but I believe in fair prices. i have been selling stock for years, so I am very comfortable with what I do. I don´t understand some people´s fascination with my test shots though, most of what I sell is at much higher prices.

What I don´t understand is why people would offer their files for 500 dollars and also for 8 dollars in the membership program. I really don´t understand that, but if it works for them...

But I will not offer ducks in the park etc.. for 300 dollars. Not going to happen. Not unless I was climbing Mount Everest.

I also don't understand why people asking P5 to raise their minimum price on other forum and she sells herself for peanuts, what is the intention behind this mask??

Is there any secret in this trade? Is there any trend which can be learnt in the classroom. When there were, they are already old-fashioned. The trend and business model are changing constantly which you can observe by yourself. I can see someone's trade secret is dumping price, destroy the whole stock industry. Dumping price is no secret, and it was practiced all the time.

I don't see how duck can priced so low ($10)? Can you imagine Hamburger/Burger can be sold much over McDonald's BigMac (2-3 times easily)? I sold duck/bird for 300-400, One need to sold 30 times to equal mine.
There was owner/photographer shot only flowers and made hundreds thousand of dollar. When it is good, even ordinary things/subject can be priceless. Why climb to mount Everest when you can catch something nice in your neighbourhood. And mount Everest is not enough, fly to the moon. LOL

Search in the internet (forum etc) for learning a trade, join forum and learn from real person in the trade and save hundred of dollars in courses. This money you can use for buying camera.
