H.264

The 5D is an amazing piece of kit... but it's first gen for what it is and there are a few issues with it. But give it 5D v2 and I reckon it will start to be a real video option.
Have you seen the the Red Rock setup for it

OK - I think I will convert the files. Down the track H264 might be a bit more widely used.

I like the look of that redrock set-up - though for me - i like the fact it looks like a slr camera. i can get away with filming in places I otherwise wouldnt be able to. But the matt box and follow focus would be nice to have. i havent actually uploaded anything from it yet. In fact I havent uploaded anything this year. better get cracking.

All and all the vid footage from the 5D is great. Problem is It has major issues as a video camera. I think you are correct in saying that the 5D V2 will probably solve most of them. Once it does though I think it will cost you more than $2700.

In any case I think we are looking at the next generation of high end video cameras once they get all the kinks out.

I haven't uploaded much this year at all recently either, must get a move on. For what I do which the majority is underwater the small size of the new DSLR's that do video would be fantastic. It would also save a fortune on excess baggage!

Yeah I like being covert too andromeda, I think I can work around all the issues. Heck I made my HVRA1U do weird stuff, im sure I can work around the 5d's small problems.

The problem is the 5d is still backordered on B and H :(

Redrock is cool, but they seem expensive, I know a guy who works at redrock, maybe I can gets a discount.

I will bet you that Nikon comes out with a replacement for the D3 that will include Video. Canon and Nikon keep playing the leapfrog game. I would really love to get a 5D Mk2 but I have such a large investment in my Nikon Lenses. If Nikon doesnt make this next leap I will have to make the change.

Also I think the bigest problem with both Canon and Nikon are its Live view auto focus speed. Its not practical which means you have to focus manualy. This can be problematic with the tiny LCD displays without some sort of Peaking option.

I am almost 50 years old so I can use all the help I can get when it comes to focus options and I find the Peaking option a godsend and keep the camera in manual focus mode most of the time.

The video from the camera looks great, but it is no where near ready for primetime. Way too many issues with audio in my opinion. msimpson, have you looked a the specs for the Red scarlett? you can repurpose the nikon lenses on this one. Depends on which brain you get, as to what you will actually get from your lenses (they have several different chip sizes) I think the one that takes full advantage of the SLR lenses is like $9500 (brain only). Well this is if they actually make it to market as currently specified.

Oh the new version of premier is supposed to take the AVCHD (h264) stuff natively. I was talking with Rod Harlan from photoshop user, and Layers magazine. He said the AVCHD stuff usually requires an update for premier depending on what camera you are coming from, (much like the updates for Photoshop when they release a new version of a still camera).

After looking at a few AVCHD cameras and even the 5D. If you look close you can see the compression. Not so much as artifacts but lack of detail in some areas. It kind of reminds me of watching HDTV on some of the public Access shows.

$9500 is much too steep for me. Im still paying off my $3200 FX1000.

$9500, but that camera shoots like 6K images. it's basically the mark 5d shooting in redraw, and giving you huge play in frames rates, resolution etc. They have c lower intro model, but you need video lenses for a 2/3 inch chip.
