First impression ... Premiere Pro CS6 won't digest the files. Need to pay for Premiere CC ... ouch

Have you tried After Effects? Don't know about the compatibility with XAVC but I can import AVCHD files into After Effects and export them with Quick Time.

Also there is a thread on Creative Cows regarding the subject.

You need CC.

yup, looking quickly towards CC.

Ok, very first clip. Used max 20x zoom at my chickens in front of darker sheds with white snow in foreground. Camera settings were left at standard default. The clip processed at 4K Photo JPEG at 90% is 2.14 GB file size. This is a pretty difficult lighting with the sun bright and dark shadows in wood shed. At 100% there is definitely mottled noise. I think because of the zoom I also had a lot of heat vapor type distortion. The chickens were about 75 yards away. Used auto focus and like I said no adjustments. A lot of purple fringe along vertical wooden post and along snow line near sheds.

Probably not a true valid test being straight from box. Initial feelings is it is not the same quality as 5D MK III but not far different from cropped sensor 7D. 7D and ti camera sensors give a finer noise and this appears to be more mottled. No guarantee that I had the best focus. More test to come in next few days. Here's a basic screen grab, kinda hard to see the fringe or noise in this small grab.

I would not submit this clip to any agency.

Photo JPEG is too crazy big. I think it's not the right codec for 4k...

I came here to ask what others are submitting at?
dapoopta 25 Dec 2013 01:26
Don, why would you not submit? Is the quality that bad ?

Curious, Don, do a similar test after messing with the Picture Profiles. Get sharpness, contrast, color all the way down, etc. If it's anything like the Z5 (same lens, hence purple fringing source but now more apparent because of 4K res) and the FS700 you can really improve things in capture so you can screw them up yourself later in post. Dynamic range should improve immensely once you flatten the capture settings.

I'll give that a try. I'm uploading now two clips with traffic, snow and beautiful mountain. In the straight from camera the noise was terrible. I used Neat Video and it looks like it cleaned up real nice. I'll try to get some feedback from both SS and P5 curators on what they think. Again, I haven't played with any settings, just straight from camera.

Scott the purple fringe is just not good in the first test. Also the mottle noise was terrible. I've found the Neat Video takes care of that I believe. I'll play with settings and see how I can improve before making final decision.
