GoPro Hero3 annouced

First glance at some frothy sea waves into late afternoon sun shots just pissed me off pretty good. Everything looked really nice until the exposure changed (which it does in steps apparently). I would have preferred to do it with a real camera, but I don't have an enclosure for any of them that would allow me to stick them into salt water and sand...

I don't see why they can't give us that ability...but I'm about mad enough to make some noise publicly maybe direct actin on their page or something?- this is pretty gawdawful.

Keep sending suggestions to GoPro, both Jake and I have. Maybe someday they will listen and give up manual exposure control.

I'm hoping that they do it as an update, not "Wait a year and buy our next "Really Pro" camera"....

So let me get this straight. You want to have all the features of a far more expensive camera on an inexpensive camera for the same price? Think about it.

I did. The bottom line is that I want usable footage.

Did I mention price?

There are lots of point and shoot cameras with manual exposure at a price point of $399. Just one simple selection to lock exposure. Most of us who have been using the GoPro for years have thought about it. Nothing fancy, point at subject to get exposure then a lock selection that keeps it there until reset again. Don't need or want any dials, switches, or ability to custom set f/stop or time, just a simple "lock exposure" at current settings. Doesn't sound like anyone really wants 5D control capability as found on more expensive cameras. At $399 it's not cheap anymore.

Indeed...as I mentioned, I would forgive all other faults in acknowledgement that the camera is a feat of engineering, a marvel of technology, and a veritable wonder - but this lack of user control takes the "pro" out.

A professional's time is valuable, no? So why would I waste my time shooting for an hour when I then have to import, watch, and edit for more than that hour, and come away with less than a couple usable 15 second clips when the system as Don described it would have easily boosted the footage gotten to at least 20? (There are other faults of course, but even GoPro is not responsible for camera shake, bad framing (you know how hard it is to frame when you can't monitor) and that bit of seaweed that stuck to the lens....)

Maybe check out the Sony HDR-GW77V. It's a little pocket camcorder waterproof to 16 ft. It was mentioned by a couple of people as a possible alternative to the GoPro on the DVInfo boards. It's $700- at B&H. I personally understand you're frustration with the Go Pro but think you're asking too much of a camera this cheap. My approach to it has usually been to shoot two hours expecting in return maybe a minute of usable (with a bit of work in post) footage. The pretty pictures usually don't come free. You know... Saw a great shot of salmon in a local river taken a few weeks ago. What went into it? A 5D, an underwater housing, a dry suit, several hours in the water....

I am so done buying camera stuff....chasing tech is not conducive to creativity (for me), so I get extra frustrated when stuff don't work good.

I should be out in the shop making a long boom pole stabilizer for a specific shot for this thing....even if it's only good for this one shot, if I can get it without that stupid flicker, it will be golden.

It's cold in that shop....12 degrees and falling....mebbe fire up the heater...

I sure hope they fix this one issue....I did say please. It's a software fix. Probably take a brain a day to code it, a camera op to test it, and a bit of spreading the word.

Then, they would be beloved on a whole new level since none of the other POV cams I researched have this feature. How could they lose?
