Just playing the Devil's advocate:
What is this http://msnbcmedia3.msn.com/j/MSNBC/Components/Photo/_new/ss-120828-misp-14.ss_full.jpg on the helmet?
The picture was grabbed from http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/48813926 (picture 14).

Looks like an Oregon Scientific camera.

Thanks. It has G sensor and GPS. Otherwise don't see advantage.

For those of you who care, I just discovered that the long-awaited GoPro App, which allows for control and preview via smartphone or tablet, is great...finally works with the new update for the Black.

Except for 2 little things, one of which I could live with (grudgingly), that being the delay. The latency is like 3 seconds. Frame rate very very low.

But what really sucks is that when you press the red button on your smartphone, guess what? "Preview not supported".

What? Argh.

I found the same. I believe the old Hero 2 has the preview while recording. At least on the HD3 it does show the preview up until hitting the shutter button. So much easier to change settings on a smart phone instead of the little menu button.

Very true, dat.

Is it possible that the preview during record is due to phone processor limitations? Why would it differ from Hero2/WiFi BacPac and Hero3?

Is there a way to play back the files to the smartphone?

Got my headstrap today. Looks more like a jockstrap but whatever. Can't use the Battery BacPac with it without extensions, which is not good....battery life while shooting with the internal battery fully charged at 11 degrees is about 5 minutes, apparently. This is with the skeleton back door, though, might be longer if the camera was kept warm and using the solid backdoor to keep heat in.

Can you set shutter speed and aperture via the app?

Not that I can see.....

I bought one of these hero 3 black edition the other day, and I must say it is outperforming my hero 1 by light years! I had the original gopro and wasn't very impressed. This gopro I feel outperforms my hv30 I at one time owned. Even in indoor settings with not tons of light.

The camera has its place, it isn't going to replace any of my real equipment, but it is a great toy to own and get some shots out of.

I just got back from driving a 10,000 ft mountain road in the snow. I mounted the HD3 on the fender and hood. Started and stopped it with my Android Phone. Even though can't monitor real time during the recording was great for start and stop.
