Description:
LONDON, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM (OCTOBER 24, 2008) (REUTERS) (SOUNDBITE) (English) ALISTAIR SMITH, EDITOR OF THE STAGE MAGAZINE, SAYING: "I think Broadway has generally hit harder by the credit crunch than the West End. The reasons for that are probably a few of them, one is that Broadway shows tend to be a lot more expensive to put on than West End shows because there is higher financial risk there. Obviously investors they are looking for money to put in the shows in America have been hit harder with Lehman Brothers for example than investors in the UK have. Shows themselves are more expensive, costs are more expensive to pay out on Broadway." I think that has to do with something about that escapism. I think that, particularly in miserable times, there is something about going to a theatre, sitting in a room with hundreds of other people and sharing that and knowing that you're not alone. It has a very different atmosphere than going to cinemas, the live experience. I would hope they're not cutting that out. As I said they will be looking at ways to cut back but I don't think they'll stop going to the theatre." CLOSE OF SIGN READING "BOX OFFICE NOW OPEN" AT ROYAL HAYMARKET THEATRE
