Description:
LONDON, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM (AUGUST 13, 2002) 1. EXTERIOR CHRISTIE'S AUCTION HOUSE 2. WIDE SHOT COPPA ITALIA TROPHY 3. CLOSE UP OF TROPHY 4. SOUNDBITE (English) CHRISTIE'S FOOTBALL SPECIALIST, DAVID CONVERY, SAYING: "It started (the Coppa Italia) in 1922 and was won by a team called Bari first of all, in between times it wasn't played for. In 1943 Torino won the Cup & the league - the first time they did a double - and then it wasn't played for again until 1958. Unfortunately in 1949 the team were killed in an aircrash so the trophy was given to the team as a mark of respect for the club. When the President retired he gave it to the club Captain at the time and since that time he passed it on to the anonymous source who is selling it in this sale." 5. WIDE SHOT TROPHY WITH F.A. CUP FOOTBALL FILE 6. STILL MONOCHROME PHOTO OF THE 1943 TORINO TEAM LONDON, UK (AUGUST 13, 2002) 7. SOUNDBITE (English) DAVID CONVERY SAYING: "Yes in a sense, it's a rarity, it's the Cup. It's what they played for, it's what they were given at the end of the match, it's not a copy or anything so rarity value will certainly bring that. I expect it to realise more that 45,000 pounds (sterling). Until the day of the auction we don't know what it actually makes, but I think it's going to do quite well". 8. WIDE SHOT FOOTBALL SHIRTS 9. CLOSE UP SIGNATURE ON PELE SHIRT 10. SOUNDBITE (English) DAVID CONVERY SAYING: "No, as I say purely on the back of the last Pele shirt sale - it came from Italy so obviously there was a lot of press coverage in Italy about the Pele shirt. The chap who owned it saw the coverage and contacted myself earlier on this year to say that he had the Cupand was interested in our selling it for him. Of course we did some research and found it to be the actual Cup that they were awarded in 1943." 11. WIDE SHOT BACK OF PELE SHIRT 12. CLOSE UP BRAZIL BADGE 13. SOUNDBITE (English) DAVID CONVERY SAYING: "Yeah, obviously people see his shirts making 160,000 pounds and he played 110 times for his country so there's potentially 109 shirts out there. So, we've had a big glut of shirts. We've got three international shirts, and we've got three Santos shirts which is his club side - and that's only scratching the surface of the amount of calls, e-mails and fax I'm getting regarding Pele shirts. We're just testing the water to see what the market is like for Pele shirts and we'll probably have some more in the next sale in March (2003)." 14. WIDE SHOT AUCTION ITEMS ON TABLE 15. CLOSE UP MATCH PROGRAMME FROM THE FIRST ENGLAND V ITALY INTERNATIONAL PLAYED IN 1933 16. SOUNDBITE (English) DAVID CONVERY SAYING: "Other highlights include the 1888 F.A. Cup final football. The actual ball was given to the Captain after the match. Later it was presented to them again, this time it was gilded and painted with the score and so on and so forth. So that's also in the sale and is probably one of the earliest things we have in the collection." 17. AUCTIONEER HOLDING 1888 F.A. CUP BALLS 18.
