GENEVA, SWITZERLAND (MAY 29, 2018) (REUTERS) VARIOUS EXTERIORS OF THE UNITED NATIONS NEWS CONFERENCE IN PROGRESS REPRESENTATIVES OF THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) AND INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT SOCIETIES (IFRC) REPRESENTATIVES LISTENING (SOUNDBITE) (English) WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) DEPUTY DIRECTOR-GENERAL FOR EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE, PETER SALAMA, SAYING: "So I think we can't conclude that we have safeguarded the city of Mbandaka but we can say that so far there has not been an explosive increase in cases, so that's a positive sign and a positive development. We have reason to be cautiously optimistic. It doesn't mean there won't be more cases but the fact is we started vaccination on May 21st and we haven't seen an explosive increase in cases so a reason to be cautiously optimistic." So we are at more than 400 people vaccinated and I won't give you the exact figures on denominators because the Ministry of Health is still finalising the exact data. But what I can tell you is that we have reached already in Mbandaka more than 90 percent of the contacts that we had listed. So the summary is the vaccine is proving to be a very acceptable intervention to the community in Mbandaka." Remember that it was a very deliberate decision to prioritise Mbandaka to prevent an urban outbreak, now we can go back and say 'OK, let's deal with this outbreak at its source in those two locations', and that's what we'll be prioritising from a case management point of view and a clinical care point of view but also from a vaccination point of view in the coming week." So here we are looking at five particular drugs, and the ministry is working with us on finalising the protocols for the use of these compounds. They are all unregistered compounds, so they all have to be done under the auspices, again, of a research protocol and a clinical trial and all with ethical review and informed consent. But the government is very keen to begin using these and we expect to formally get approval and start within the coming days." VARIOUS EXTERIORS OF UNITED NATIONS BUILDING
