Description:
BERLIN, GERMANY (JUNE 4, 2018) (REUTERS) GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL AND ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER BENJAMIN NETANYAHU ARRIVING FOR NEWS CONFERENCE NETANYAHU SPEAKING TO AIDE REPORTER'S NOTES (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "Germany did not leave the (Iran nuclear) deal, along with other European partners. We agree that the question of Iran's regional influence is worrying, especially for Israel's security. That's why we will make every diplomatic effort to make use of our influence on the issue of Iran's ballistic programme and its activities in Yemen and the presence of Iran's army in Syria." MERKEL SPEAKING PHOTOGRAPHER (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "Overall, we don't agree on all issues but we are friends and partners and we try to understand each other's interests. There is also a wide range of common views which we will continue to address. Thank you very much for your visit and to good cooperation. We are looking forward to our visit to Israel in October of this year." NETANYAHU PHOTOGRAPHER REPORTER (SOUNDBITE) (English) ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER, BENJAMIN NETANYAHU, SAYING (on meeting U.S. ambassador to Germany at airport): "I was asked by the American ambassador (Richard Grenell) to meet him at the airport. I'm going to meet him briefly at the airport but I wouldn't draw any meeting into that. That is, it just doesn't exist. We respect the government and the policies of Chancellor Merkel. We have some disagreements as you can see on occasion but they are not really in goal, they are more on the question of the method." MERKEL LISTENING (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, (ASKED HOW GERMANY CAN CONTINUE TO NEGOTIATE WITH IRAN, "A REGIME WHICH CALLS FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF ISRAEL") SAYING: "Let me say the following: we strongly condemn what Iran's leadership said (a tweet calling Israel "a cancer which has to be removed"). We obviously support Israel's right to security which is what we have unequivocally told Iran on numerous occasions. Yet we believe we have the same goal which is that Iran must never get nuclear arms and the question where we differ is how to best achieve this goal." PAN FROM PHOTOGRAPHER TO WIDE OF NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "We have differing views for example on the settlements but overall, Israel's right to security is being threatened every day and as partners, we will of course trade high tech products with Israel, such as drones which do an excellent job in Mali as observation drones to ensure our soldiers' safety, or at least to improve their safety."
