Description:
DOHA, QATAR (DECEMBER 3, 2012) (REUTERS) EUROPEAN UNION NEWS CONFERENCE IN PROGRESS (SOUNDBITE) (English) EUROPEAN CLIMATE COMMISSIONER CONNIE HEDEGAARD SAYING: "We all know that it is too few countries who commit in the second commitment period, nonetheless it is important that some of us do it in order not to waste all the work that has been done over years. But I would just urge everybody not to forget, also to focus on what is it that the remaining countries that represent 85 percent of global emissions, what are they doing to add onto ambition also in the shorter term. " MEDIA (SOUNDBITE) (English) EUROPEAN CLIMATE COMMISSIONER CONNIE HEDEGAARD SAYING: "China's per capita emission is now 7.2 tons per capita , in Europe it is 7.5, the U.S. per capita emission is 17.3, Russia 12.80. I could mention many other, I could mention many from this region having much much higher per capita emission than those countries who are actually taking the second commitment period. Just to make the point that yes, those of us who do so, we will have to be even more ambitious and do more, but it is also very important not to forget about the remaining 85 percent of emissions. What are these countries doing? " NEWS CONFERENCE IN PROGRESS DOHA 2012 COP 18 BANNER IN HALLWAY NEWS CONFERENCE OF U.S. ENVOY ON CLIMATE CHANGE (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. ENVOY TODD STERN SAYING: "While there certainly needs to be differentiation between countries we would argue that this differentiation needs to be made on the basis of practical, pragmatic, real world material considerations, so that its' a differentiation that has got to be built on countries' national circumstances and their capabilities, but not built on ideology, not built on an ideology that says we are going to draw a line down between the middle of the world and countries are on one side or the other, and if you are on one side you have no obligations, and if you are on the other side you have all. That is not what we agreed to in Durban." SPEAKER PODIUM REPORTER ON SCREED ASKING QUESTION "This is going to be an enormously challenging and I think enormously important task to get this agreement right and we will be looking forward to participate in the effort to do that with high intensity." SPEAKER PODIUM, MODERATOR SAYING "Thank you very much everybody"/ MEDIA DOHA COP18 CONFERENCE HALLWAY CLIMATE ACTIVISTS GATHERED IN HALLWAY CLIMATE ACTIVISTS HOLDING BANNERS DEMANDING CLIMATE ACTION NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (English) LEADER FOR WORLD WILDLIFE FUND (WWF) GLOBAL CLIMATE AND ENERGY WORK, SAMANTHA SMITH, SAYING: "The EU has arrived here at this conference without a position on cancelling hot air and the one reason why they haven't gotten that position is the government of Poland. Now, we already know that here in Doha it is very unlikely the governments are going to agree to raising their ambition in a way that is consistent with the science but also with impacts that people are experiencing now all over the world. But this is one thing that these governments could achieve that would have benefits for the atmosphere, that would actually do something concrete about climate change." WWF NEWS CONFERENCE ENDING
