Description

McGinnis Lake is located within Petroglyphs Provincial Park in Ontario Canada. It is an example of a meromictic lake. Meromictic lakes have distinctive chemical composition layers within the lakes that do not turn over like normal lakes.

In the summer months the lake exhibits an emerald or jade green color. Calcium carbonate molecules are byproducts of algae which will clean a lake of colored dissolved substances that normally appear as a brown hue. This cleansing allows blue and green colored wavelengths of light to penetrate to greater depths resulting in a green color.

Due to the great increase of algae during the summer months an overabundance of calcium carbonate is produced which precipitates out of the water leaving a whitish-gray, clay-like substance along the shoreline. Marl is a mixture of trapped algae cells, insects, crustaceans, snail and clam shells and other organic matter. Compacted mounds of marl occur along the shoreline to depths of 10 metres or more.
