Red Kokanee Salmon Swim And Spawn In Shallow Gravel Creek

Kokanee salmon are fresh water fish native to land-locked Kootenay lake. Since the damming of Kootenay river for hydroelectric power these salmon have been cut off from the ocean and also faced loss of marshes for food and reproduction. In response to this ecological change, artificial spawning pools have been created at the mouth of Kokanee creek to provide a safe and fertile habitat for the Kokanee salmon to spawn.

Here are a selection of clips showing the spawning pools and green headed, red bodied Kokanee salmon spawning in the river gravel circa October 2012.
