Description:
Using ATP, the cell transports sodium Potassium ions to exterior of cell releasing 2 potassium ions into cell's cytoplasm. In the case of active transport, the transmembrane proteins are known as ion pumps or transporters because they pump the molecules against the concentration gradient and through the cell membrane using energy usually derived from ATP. One of the most common pumps is the sodium-potassium pump, which moves three sodium ions to the exterior of the cell and releases two potassium ions into the cell's cytoplasm. This helps cells maintain an electrical charge known as the resting potential, which prepares nerve and muscle cells for the propagation of action potentials leading to nerve impulses and muscle contraction.
