Description:
A pond of Victoria amazonica, the largest species of the Nymphaeaceae family of water lilies. Bogor Botanical Gardens is one of the oldest botanical garden in Asia, representing not only Indonesia's rich botanical diversity, but also other places. Its collection contains 13,983 different kinds of trees and plants of various origin. Since founded 200 years ago, this botanical garden has been playing important role. One of such an achievement was supporting the South East Asia's palm oil plantation need of palm oil tree seeds (South East Asia is a world major producer of palm oil, which trees origin could be traced back to the seeds in the Bogor Botanical Gardens). The BBG also played major role in the introduction of Cinchona trees to Java which would ultimately make the island the largest producer of quinine bark for malaria treatment at that time.
